Northern Tanzania, once the poor relation to much of the rest of Africa in terms of riding, has come galloping on!
For luxury riding there is a property with excellent professional stables and management situated on a hilltop north of and contiguous to, the Western Corridor of the Serengeti from which one can day-ride or do longer, more focused, multi-day luxury riding safaris on a 150,000 hectare (350,000 acre) concession.
These riding safaris may combine absolutely top-notch mobile camps with one or more of three permanent properties. For those looking to ride and combine a luxury Serengeti safari into the equation, this is the ultimate riding safari! At certain times of year this is also prime Serengeti migration territory, too.
In a rather more accessible location is a conservancy on the plains between Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara, below the stunning western Gregorian wall of the Rift Valley. Here is an excellent, small, luxury safari camp which allows guests to take a break between more defined game viewing and from where some wonderfully relaxed riding with game can be achieved (as well as other adventurous safari activities).
The horses are also very well schooled but the difference here is that this property, whilst smaller at 35,000 acres, offers a fantastically well-located position so that those who wish to ride as an added adventure activity whilst in Tanzania can do so as an integral part of a their individually tailored safari. The riding here is at all paces through scattered acacia bush and thickets with some fairly open country that is generally free of holes and rocks so it can be quite sporting and occasionally fast – intermediate riding at least.
For a true adventure, though, The Explorations Company also has close links to some of the best riding operators in this part of East Africa. Clients return time and time again having had the rides of their lives with rides of usually between 4 and 9 days typically available. They have wonderful horses and the riding is very sporting (advanced intermediate and upwards) in some of the finest bush country in the north of Tanzania.
The shortest ride is based at a permanent base camp but longer rides, which vary from the hauntingly desolate – and fast riding! - open plains around flamingo-filled Lake Natron to the superb elephant and wildlife viewing corridors of southern Amboseli / Sinya and western/northern Kilimanjaro, use a fully mobile camp which moves each day and encapsulates one of the most quintessential pieces of Africa that we know!
This is Very Big Country, a vast area to ride in and these rides are generally for those who want to seriously mix a riding safari with game viewing in one of the worlds most beautiful and spectacular locations.
