Malawi is an extremely rewarding country to visit for those searching for a slightly different family safari holiday. It’s impossible not to start off by mentioning the people. We have rarely come across such broad smiles and such friendliness – which makes it so hard to leave! It also offers the activity-seeking family so much to do!
From the game-viewing safaris at Liwonde National Park, where one can see hippo and elephant and go out by boat, as well as by vehicle, to Mkulumadzi, where lion now can also be seen.
For those wanting a more intensive, concentrated wildlife experience, one can always combine Malawi with Zambia safaris too, but with the development of the new Mkulumadzi reserve, we don’t think this is necessary any longer.
Add to this the Nyika Plateau with its lovely, cosy log cabins set amidst a pine plantation and the most awe-inspiring scenery, where one can game-view and walk – and enjoy a truly diverse and wonderful holiday. Visit the pottery at Nkhotakota – and try your hand at throwing pottery and bring home a souvenir! Stay at a lovely, colonial tea plantation with a swimming pool and where there are lovely walks and picnics, and one can see how black tea is made. If you enjoy walking then consider Mount Mulanje to climb – for the truly fit and active! Visit the Zomba Plateau where one can mountain-bike and walk to the Falls. Stop off and see the local markets with their gorgeous avocadoes, macadamia nuts and cashews!
Then finish off at Lake Malawi, where a whole host of wonderful experiences await you! Stay at an owner-managed, family lodge and learn to sail and windsurf. Go snorkelling. Take a catamaran up the lake and sleep on-board. Stay at a wonderful, simple tented camp and kayak around the lake each day. There is also a lovely eco-lodge on the lake set on a powder-white beach, with lots of activities on offer, both water and land-based, and it is also heavily involved with a community project. You can experience the warm welcome of village life and learn about the local tribe. Lastly, you might like to stay at a luxury lodge where one can water ski, sail, snorkel and undertake every watersport under the sun!
