This is without doubt a large, sprawling capital city but certainly worthy of a stopover for a few days to explore. Delve into the cobbled streets of Candelaria, where you will find some great small museums, such as the Botero museum, dedicated to one of Colombia’s most famous artists and his iconic paintings and sculptures.
Stroll, or even cycle, through one of the many pretty parks in the suburbs alongside the locals on a Sunday, as the main roads are closed to traffic. Have dinner by candlelight in a romantic restaurant at the top of Monserrate Peak overlooking the whole city and the Andes behind.
Immerse yourself in pre-Colombian history in the famous Gold Museum, filled with floor upon floor of intricate gold treasures, jade masks and many more, one of the most impressive collections of artefacts in one place anywhere in the world.
