The Galápagos Islands offer an incredible diversity of wildlife both on land and under the water and is one of the most spectacular places on Earth to explore these natural wonders.
Distances however between some of the islands can be quite far, so for many the chance to see as much as possible means taking to a small expedition vessel in order to sail between the islands.
That, however, is not the only choice when it comes to considering a Galápagos Island holiday. If you are travelling with younger children then staying on land is likely to be a much more flexible as well as better value choice.
Those who want to combine a shorter Galápagos wildlife cruise with the chance to try some diving in Galápagos will find staying in Santa Cruz for a few days before or after the cruise will make a perfect combination for them.
Land-based tours are ideal for those who wish to explore the Galápagos Islands but perhaps can’t bear the thought of spending a number of nights sleeping on a boat.
Each of the four inhabited islands – Santa Cruz, San Cristobal, Isabela and Floreana – can be accessed via short boat journeys where you then stay in simple but very comfortable beachfront properties in secluded locations.
Leave the fixed schedule of a cruise behind and embrace the freedom of a land-based tour. You can choose how you spend your day and have more free time on land to explore independently.
You also have a chance to get to know the people of the Galápagos and explore the small communities, not to mention discovering the wonderful wildlife of the islands.
If you decide to stay on Santa Cruz, Isabela, San Cristobal and Floreana Islands overnight, you will find a small selection of simple but comfortable lodges.
Santa Cruz Island offers the most luxurious options. There are beachfront family-friendly hotels to sumptuous private villas with their own pool and chef or delightful African safari-style tented camps in the lush highlands.
On the other islands, lodges are simpler but provide a great base from which to explore individual islands in more depth with a great emphasis on active adventure, such as hiking, stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking – ideal for families with children of mixed ages.
We can customise your perfect island-based tour incorporating one or all of these islands, whether on a dedicated walking tour or also incorporating the opportunity to kayak, cycle and snorkel.
