Wonderful Life - Kenya From The Air

Kenya has always epitomised everything that is Africa. It hosted the first real wildlife holidays and its diversity of landscape, people and wildlife has drawn more people to safari in Kenya than any other country in Africa.

There is such a huge choice of national park and private concession areas in Kenya that it is possible for the discerning visitor to admire breath-taking scenery and dense game populations in peaceful surroundings. Servicing these quieter Kenya safari areas is a wide range of excellent, small, little known safari camps.

The Masai Mara is the scene of one of the planet’s most dazzling displays of wildlife during the annual Great Migration. This is when millions of wildebeest and zebra go in search of greener pastures, while watchful predators wait for their opportunity.

Yet, The Explorations Company luxury safari holidays in Kenya are more than this. We have been perfecting the art of the Kenya luxury safari for over thirty years. Nobody does it better. Our specialist guides will take you to finest vantage points to deliver an unforgettable safari experience, which you can recount around the campfire over sundowners and a delectable meal, before retiring to your spacious, well-appointed accommodation. With The Explorations Company Kenya safari holidays whether you’re under canvas, in a totally private house or lodge, you’re certainly never roughing it.

Your bespoke itinerary will show you African nature in all its glory and let you experience the very best of Kenya. There’s Lewa Downs, where the magnificent Mount Kenya forms an impressive backdrop to rhino conservation efforts. Or, Laikipia where you can roam the terrain on foot or mountain bike and then set up camp wild in the bush. Maybe you want to fit in a trip to the vivid crater lakes of the Great Rift Valley with their frescoes of pink flamingo, or snap unforgettable photos of elephant trekking past Mount Kilimanjaro?

Kenya is not all ceaseless excitement, however. There are some idyllic moments of serenity to enjoy at the idyllic East African coastal resorts. Whatever you want from your Kenyan safari, we are happy to oblige.

What Activities are available in Kenya?

Kenya is a perfect location for a Family Safari

Introduce your children to the thrills of African wildlife with a family safari in Kenya. Your family will experience the African wilderness on trips to the semi-arid Laikipia Plateau and the Masai Mara National Reserve.

You’ll be tucking into breakfast with the long-necked residents of Giraffe Manor and meeting orphaned elephant and cheeky chimpanzee at nearby sanctuaries. A visit to a traditional Maasai village helps the appreciation of Kenyan tribal life and, of course, no safari trip is complete without African game drives, and everyone will have the chance to see Africa’s Big Five.

Game Drives in Masai Mara

You can explore hidden gems stretching along the Mara River with your own private guide onboard a customised open vehicle. Don’t forget your camera to capture that pride of lion, lone leopard or herd of elephant striding through the bush. Experience the sights and sounds of the dusk-pink savanna which plays host to one of the natural wonders of the world. From about July to October herds of wildebeest and zebra cover the plains, risking their lives to cross the river from Tanzania.

The Mara's rich eco-system includes acacia-studded plains, riparian forest and woodland which attract more than 300 birds from lofty secretary bird to ostrich and array of wildlife from cheetah to giraffe.

Every day is different when you venture on an Explorations Company luxury safari. Don’t forget to keep a record of your sightings. Celebrate your wildlife experience with a sundowner overlooking the river.

Hot-air balloon Safari

You will enjoy a birds-eye view of the African wildlife when you glide over the majestic Masai Mara at sunrise in a hot-air balloon. You’ll be driven from your camp at dawn to meet your expert pilot and go through the safety procedures. Watch the colourful balloon inflate, ready for launch. Listen as the roar of the torch takes you high into the sky and see the breath-taking sight of the game below during the one-hour flight.

Laid out before you are elephant, looking improbably small, and giraffe browsing among the treetops. You may also spot antelope racing along the plains and the formidable eagle guarding his eerie. Keep an eye out for prides of lion and chart the course of the Mara River as it meanders into the distance.

Every balloon ride is unique and your experience will depend on the wind direction. On landing, toast your early-morning adventure with a glass of champagne, cooked breakfast and plates of exotic Kenyan fruits on the plains of the Masai Mara. Your pilot will present you with a certificate as a souvenir of your flight.

Cultural visit to Samburu Tribe

Learn more about the bright-beaded collars worn by the women of the Samburu Tribe when you visit a traditional manyatta. Discover the hidden messages within this elaborate jewellery and see the warriors gather to dance during an exclusive glimpse into the life of this colourful Kenyan tribe.

Like the Maasai, the Samburu follow the rain in search of fresh pasture and water for their cattle, camels, goats and sheep. You’ll join the women in the beading workshop. Learn how the colourful collars reveal subtle clues about their wealth and status. This is the place to buy an authentic souvenir as you know it will directly help these women support their families. You may also witness a traditional dance by the tribal warriors – providing that picture-perfect moment.

Dhow cruise along Mida Creek

Enjoy a sunset cruise through a bird lover’s paradise when you sail on a traditional dhow through Mida Creek. Stretching inland from the Indian Ocean to Arabuko Sokoke Forest, this stretch of water is one of Watamu’s hidden treasures. The creek is home to flocks of pink flamingo, malachite kingfisher and African fish eagle.

You will relax on board an Arabian boat, sundowner in hand, as you cruise through the mangroves in the shade of the palms alongside the dug-out canoes. The creek has wide, healthy beds of seagrass and coral, home to many species of fish and feeding sea turtles.

Mida Creek is where you can experience some of the most beautiful natural attractions on the Kenyan coast. It is also a stopover point for many migratory birds such as the crab plover, curlew sandpiper, whimbrel and sanderling. Mida is best explored by dhow at dusk, when the setting sun turns the waters to gold and flocks of roosting birds fill the sky.

When is the best time to visit Kenya?

One of the best times to visit Kenya is from July to September, during the country’s dry season, which also coincides with the Great Migration of wildebeest and zebra.

The rainy seasons are also good times to travel, as there are fewer visitors and you can admire the striking emerald vegetation. December in particular is a great time to travel to Kenya, since the rains are short, and you have the chance to see new-born animals and migratory bird species. Only the peak of the ‘long rains’ in March, April and May are very wet.
