This is North Island, a private island paradise in the Seychelles

Welcome to North Island, a private island paradise in the Seychelles, where they aim to provide the very best in privacy, location, accommodation, services, food, facilities and experience.

North Island is a private island that you can book for your family or group of friends. It is located in the inner Seychelles islands, blessed with tropical forest on dramatic granite peaks, and with vast pristine beaches. A stay on this private island will afford you the safety, privacy and freedom to completely detox from the outside world and immerse yourself in the experience.

What is the accommodation like at the North Island Seychelles?

North Island features only 11 private villas, where each guest can stay with an extraordinary level of luxury. Ten beachfront villas have been built along the East Beach with direct access to the ocean, each sitting privately screened from the others surrounded by the palm trees.

They are open-plan with airflow to cool the villas with the sea breeze a pleasing blend of chic Robinson Crusoe mixed with sophisticated designer elements. One could also opt to stay in the completely delightful Villa North Island, perched on granite boulders at the far end of East Beach, allowing complete exclusivity and space. This villa, accessed over a leadwood bridge, is over double the size of the others. There are multiple decks taking one down to the beach where one can swim or relax with complete privacy.

Inside the villa there is a small plunge pool, shaded seating areas where you can watch the ocean, and an over-sized marble bathtub. This villa is ideal for couples and honeymooners.

The culinary experience at North Island is exquisite, tailored to each guest on a daily basis. Michelin Starred chef Akira Back works in collaboration with the island chefs to design menus that use the islands’ harvest of locally sourced ingredients. The various dining venues mean that one can dine depending on ones mood. The Piazza Bar and Lounge is a beautiful, candlelit venue where Akira Back produces the most sophisticated culinary experiences.

The freshest ingredients from land and sea are combined with the flavours of the Seychelles. Whilst dining, perfectly located at the edge of the island where land meets ocean, it is even possible to witness turtles coming to the beach to nest.

For a more relaxed experience, one could opt to dine at Sunset Beach, which serves fresh pizza, salads and tapas-style BBQ snacks which are perfect for sharing whilst drinking a cocktail made for you by the mixologist.

For a completely private meal, why not dine in your villa? The chefs will create a meal of your choice and deliver it to your door so you can dine in comfort in your own space. Or for an even more exciting experience, dine privately in a location on the island! One of our favourite experiences is to enjoy champagne and canapes on a rocky outcrop overlooking the horizon, nestled in front of the bonfire.

Alternatively one could dine privately on the beach, or in the historic Library, or out on the helipad. Anywhere on the island is possible!

When is the best time to visit the Seychelles?

The best time to visit North Island is April to May, and October to November. The weather in these periods is beautifully calm and warm.

The northwest trade winds are from November to March, and the southeast trade winds are from May to September. It is still perfectly possible to visit during the trade winds but the weather will be slightly less calm.

Conservation and Philanthropy in action on North Island

North Island is currently undergoing a wonderful regeneration. After it ceased being used as a plantation in the 1970’s, North Island was left with many alien species of plant and animals that impacted the indigenous flora and fauna. The current custodians have worked hard to restore North Island and eradicate non-indigenous species.

Invasive plants are being cleared and replaced by thousands of local trees and plants which have been grown in the nurseries of the lodge. Now, indigenous bird species that had not been seen on the island for many years have started to return to nest there of their own accord, and Hawksbill and Green turtles have returned to nest on the beaches once more.

In this project, which is called ‘Noah’s Ark’, they are also protecting the Aldabra Giant Tortoise. In 1997 only a handful remained, but now they have 80-100 tortoises roaming safely on the island, as well as baby tortoises being cared for in the pen until they are old enough to be safe on the island.

Monitoring and protecting turtle nesting sites, where the number of sea turtles nesting on their beaches have doubled in the case of Hawksbills and increased six-fold in the case of Green turtles.
