Design, style, comfort, excellence, location. Shake - don’t stir! – these ingredients and blend in varying quantities for perfection to suit all tastes. Luxury lodges in Africa, especially the uber-stylish, are ideal for anyone wanting to celebrate a “big” anniversary or birthday, or just those who simply place a high importance on design and style, in whatever measure, as part of their visit to Africa.
Whilst the variation between such lodges is essentially only limited by the creator’s individual imagination there are some commonalities driven by rationale, climate, practicality and that certain je ne sais quoi that is “Africa”. The bedrooms might be majestic and be huge, with vast en suite bathrooms, or they may be designer-trendy-minimalist or created to mirror some local feature, whether it be a tree growing through the centre of the room, décor mirroring the surrounding country or one side of the room simply opening up to allow full appreciation of an almost-miraculous vista.
Some even have removable rooflights so that the full panoply of the night can be appreciated when in bed. Some have views from the loo that make reading material obsolete! But all will anyway be located to have views that are at the very least utterly memorable.
Fabrics will be sumptuous with tones usually in keeping with one’s surroundings. Sometimes the décor will be other-worldly, sometimes it will be simple; but it will always inspire. Beds will be king-sized, linen will be top quality and your room will be full of small, thoughtful touches. Rooms may have their own plunge pool and good-sized living space and, often, a daybed or hammock. Service (rooms may often have a dedicated butler service) will be discrete and excellent. Food and the wine list will be top class.
And all this is probably located in the bush, miles from anywhere which is, after all, the point. A private vehicle and guide for game viewing can be arranged if not anyway the norm, with game viewing, walking and other activities arranged to suit a totally flexible daily schedule focused on doing as much or as little as you want, when you want.
Such lodges, however, are not only “in the bush”. Africa’s coastline has a handful of properties that are suitable for clients who want to mix a very high level of taste and design with total relaxation or other activities such as scuba diving or game fishing.
Some of these lodges are in the planet’s “top few” lists. Some are simply the best-in-breed. All are superlative and, somewhere, there will be the right mix of character, location and style to suit your individual taste, carefully chosen for you, by us, to parameters that are, of course, shaken and not stirred!
