Tokyo is a world of contrasts in one city

One of the largest cities and the most populous metropolitan area in the world, Tokyo is the political, economic and fashion capital of Japan. It is often said that it is the people that make great cities and Tokyoites are known for their politeness, precision and high regard for creativity - qualities that are firmly engrained in the city's characteristics.

Furthermore, Tokyo in particular and Japan on the whole are considered global culinary capitals, boasting the highest concentration of Michelin star restaurants in the world.

Tokyo was originally known as Edo, a small fishing village that was subsequently fortified in the late 12th century. The city rose to prominence during Edo period, an era of peace and prosperity under the rule of shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. During this period, for over 250 years, the society remained cut off from the rest of the world. The shogunate came to an end in 1868 as Emperor Meiji moved his base from Kyoto and renamed the city Tokyo meaning “eastern capital”.

The Explorations Company, where no two journeys have ever been the same

The city has braved many challenges in the recent past. It suffered vast destruction in 1923 during the great Kanto earthquake and again in 1943 during World War II. It also suffered from a catastrophic economic recession in the 1990s. On each occasion, Tokyoites demonstrated unfathomable resilience and tenacity, as they regrouped and rebuilt. In 2020, Tokyo will become the only Asian city that would have hosted the Olympic Games twice.

Exploring Tokyo is like travelling through time. One moment you are admiring tranquil ancient shrines and gardens and the next you are in the midst of maddening crowds, awe-inspiring skyscrapers and wacky gaming arcades; in one corner of the city you could experience traditional tea ceremony, centuries old Noh and sumo wrestling and in the other space-age technology including sound labs, robots and bullet trains. Tokyo will surprise you in many ways! It is also a convenient base to visit nearby towns of Nikko and Kamakura.
