China and Japan start to enjoy excellent weather conditions with spring in full swing. Himalayan kingdoms of Bhutan and Nepal also offer optimal conditions for trekking whereas the southern regions begin to heat up with the arrival of summer.
Japan takes centre stage in April with the arrival of the famed Sakura (cherry blossom) season. For excellent trekking and breath-taking Himalayan vistas, head to Bhutan, as the visibility is fantastic, and you can enjoy beautiful rhododendrons and orchids. If you are looking for a safari experience without the crowds, April is an excellent time to go on a tiger safari in India or to look for orangutans in the jungles of Borneo. Sri Lanka and Maldives are excellent for family-friendly holidays over Easter.
April is an excellent time to visit Bhutan for wonderful trekking, spring flowers in full bloom including rhododendrons and orchids, and for excellent visibility over expansive mountain vistas. Although it never gets too crowded in Bhutan, for something a bit more off-the-beaten-track, consider visiting Eastern Bhutan or going on a multiple-day trek with mobile camping.
Japan’s famed Cherry Blossom season can be enjoyed in the first half of April in Tokyo, Kyoto and across the island of Honshu. This is an incredibly busy tourist season though! Why not visit Yakushima Island where you can immerse yourself in the country’s oldest cedar forests and witness vibrant flowers in full bloom throughout the mountains and villages, and also indulge in cycling, canoeing, snorkeling and banana boating?
Another superb region to visit in April is China with mild temperatures across the country. It’s a great time to hike along the Great Wall of China, to view the giant pandas in Chengdu and Terracotta Warriors in Xian, cruise in the mighty Yangtze, and to enjoy the peach blossom season in Shanghai. The ancient Buddhist kingdom of Tibet reopens in April.
By April, North and Central India are already experiencing extremely hot and dry conditions, which leads to drying up of watering holes and depleted forest cover in the national parks, increasing the chances of spotting wildlife. If you can cope with high temperatures, April is one of the best times of year to go on a tiger safari in India. You can then head into the mountains to cool off – one of our favourite hidden gems is Shakti 360 Leti.
Experience one of Asia’s finest safari experiences in the ancient rainforests of Sabah in Borneo looking for unique wildlife including orangutans, proboscis monkeys and pygmy elephants. Also visit Gaya Island just off the coast of Kota Kinabalu for superb beaches, snorkeling and kayaking.
Much like March, excellent weather conditions continue across Nepal for excellent trekking and wildlife viewing.
Although it can get quite hot during the day, if you want to enjoy the beaches without the crowds, April is an excellent time of year to visit Sri Lanka and the Maldives, making them very popular destinations for families looking to travel over Easter.
