Take a trip into nearby Honduras to visit the Mayan site of Copan, with its unique intricately carved stelae, and explore these remarkable ruins in the company of resident archaeologist David Sedat.
Copan, considered by many to be one of the most spectacular cities of the ancient Mayans, flourished during the 7th century and was considered the cradle of its civilisation. The jungle that surrounds Copan is dense, filled with sounds of a variety of animals such as monkeys, colourful guacamayas (large parrots), tree sloths and peccaries.
David has embarked on an effort to reunify the ancient Maya realms of Copan, Honduras and Quirigua, Guatemala, separated by some 35 miles only. This project envisions a system of trekking trails and experimental botanical gardens by which many local communities throughout this hinterland can become involved in sustainable agriculture and tourism.
