Famously described by author Aldous Huxley as being “the most beautiful lake in the world”, Lake Atitlan certainly has one of the most scenic locations set in Guatemala’s lush highlands.
The lake has also been home to many different cultures, including the Mayans who ruled over the whole of the lake area until the 16th century. Many of the inhabitants still wear their traditional clothing and continue the old way of life that revolved around the lake, speaking Mayan dialects and paying tribute to Mayan gods like Maximon.
From here visit the stunning colourful market of Chichicastenango, a riot of colourful stalls selling beautiful textiles. Explore the small villages and island communities on the lake, and hike up its volcanic peaks for some stunning panoramas.
