Chiapas & Palenque

Chiapas & Palenque.jpg

This southern central region lies at the heart of the ancient Mayan world, encompassing tropical lowlands, spectacular waterfalls, dramatic Mayan ruins and fascinating indigenous cultures.

With a landscape of misty mountains, pine-covered hills and dense jungle, Chiapas has an ideal climate for rich biodiversity from howler monkeys and jaguar, to numerous avian species, such as toucans. Such is the backdrop for the impressive Mayan site at Palenque, defined as one of the civilization’s most important cities and set amid a thick forest of towering ceiba trees. Continue to delve deep into Mayan history to the almost-forgotten ruins of Yaxchilan and Bonampak, boasting ornamental façades and ceremonial sites. Further west, in the pine-clad forest of the highlands, explore the cobbled streets and lively markets of San Cristóbal de las Casas and its surrounding villages, home to indigenous and artisan communities, or stop off in jaw-dropping canyons and cascades of ice-blue waters.
