Michoacan state is host not just to quaint colonial towns, fascinating artisan craftsmen and pre-Colombian sites, but also to traditional celebrations and the spectacular migration of millions of monarch butterflies.
Michoacan’s jewels include Morelia, a bustling university town that offers some fantastic artworks within its colonial mansions as well as the cluster of artisan villages and pre-Colombian ruins of Tzintzuntzan around Patzcuaro. The 1st November heralds Mexico’s unique Day of the Dead Festival, when shops are crammed with intricately decorated sugar skulls and family and friends gather together to visit the graves of their loved ones. In the quaint little colonial town of Patzcuaro, locals row by candelight to Janitzio Island on the nearby lake for an all-night vigil at the cemetery there. Witness a unique migration unlike any other – that of millions of monarch butterflies annually between Canada and Michoacan. What is more incredible is that no one butterfly makes the entire round trip as the migration lasts for the duration of at least three to four generations.
