TOFT Tigers - India

Tiger tourism and conservation - Are they compatible?

Tiger showing teeth.jpg

TOFT Tigers, (which stands for Tour Operators for Tigers), is an organisation which aims to use sustainable and responsible travel to put funds back into the largely-underfunded conservation of the tiger. They recognise that wildlife tourism, if managed well, can be the vital factor that saves wildlife and wild habitats.

The Mission

The Indian subcontinent has a rapidly increasing demand for wilderness and wildlife tourism as its biodiversity riches are realised and its economy and need for leisure time grows. This can provide the driver to effect an extraordinary new template for saving the remaining forests critical to the survival of Tigers and many of the other subcontinent’s precious and iconic species. Visitors themselves become a destination’s strongest advocates for protection, conservation and financial support, and ensure the next generations continue to cherish these wildernesses.

TOFTigers’ aim has always to be at the forefront of advocate, guiding and developing this vision and the skills, resources, planning and action needed to achieve it.

Project Funding

TOFTigers has a small fund for its network of accommodation providers to apply for support with projects or initiatives that can both enhance conservation efforts in their buffer or corridor regions of the protected areas and help community integration and enterprise within their own supply chain or the local tourism sector.

This has included projects like Village Environmental projects in Kanha, Vulture programmes in Corbett, a research project in Madhya Pradesh and Kids visits into many parks across India.

Tourism and Conservation

Are they compatible?

The basic premise of the TOFTigers campaign is that responsible well managed nature and safari tourism into the Indian subcontinent finest wildernesses and Tiger reserves is the very best way to save their forests, their iconic tigers and their extraordinary biodiversity.

As has been shown in research the world over, nature tourism and its services can provide the economic imperative and a very tangible reason for protecting forest and wildlife including tigers, and if we protect tigers, as an iconic ‘must see’ predator, we also protect the landscapes and habitats that they exist on, and in so doing the services that forests, wildlands and biodiversity provides.

Nature tourism, is the only industry at present that is non extractive of its habitat and wants to see healthy untouched habitat and biodiversity in all its glory. Nature travellers is prepared to happily pay for standing forests over felled forests, live animals instead of dead one, natural landscapes over cultivated ones.

India’s and Nepal’s booming nature tourism industry, over 4 million visitors per year, is already saving tigers and habitat – but more by default than by good planning, and TOFTigers real concern is that too little time and effort is being invested in land use planning, tourism planning and monitoring to ensure a wildlife destination gets the most benefits from nature tourism enterprises; ensuring responsible, well planned and sustainable formats of nature, safari and adventure tourism are achieved.

This is where TOFTigers aims to try and change how wildlife tourism is derived and operated across the subcontinent, and why your purchasing decisions - as a traveller – like only using TOFTigers members including their Tour Operators, Ground Agents and PUG accredited Lodges – really can make a difference to both parks and local communities buffeted by wildlife conflict.
