Mountain-climbing holidays in Africa

mountain climbing holidays.jpg

Mountain-climbing in Africa is definitely one of those ‘must do’ things, as far as we are concerned!

But, there are certain ways in which to explore the mountains, and we don’t take the commercial routes! What we offer are comfortable, luxury climbs in terms of having your own climbing crew to assist you, complete with guides and cook, and these can either be on an individual basis or we can place you on a scheduled departure with a group.

Our favourite mountain to climb must be Mount Kenya – where we have a week’s route to circumnavigate the mountain, which is so incredibly rewarding. The heather covers the mountains and it is an incredibly pretty route. The Mount Kenya is a ‘twin-peaked’ volcanic spike. Reaching the highest of the three peaks on Mount Kenya requires technical expertise, but the third highest peak of Point Lenana offers the finest 6-day trek on the continent.

Trek through dense rainforest, which encircles the lower slopes of the mountain, which is home to elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard and primates. You then traverse the vast moorlands, past undulating grassy valleys and deep rocky gorges, through some of the most fabulous vegetation on our planet. You arrive at the summit of Lenana early enough to be rewarded by views of the new day dawning across East Africa. The whole experience is only heightened by the fact that there will be few other trekkers with whom you share the mountain.

The second best mountain climb in our opinion is Mount Meru – the tenth highest mountain in Africa at 14,980 ft. These are 3 or 4-day climbs, but again, every client who has ever climbed this mountain has come back simply ecstatic. Third route must go to Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, and here we only offer the week’s climb on the Shira Route, which gives one the optimum opportunity of getting to Uhuru, the peak. There are 5-day hikes in the Fish River Canyon in Namibia too – which is in awe-inspiring scenery, but whilst challenging, this is not the same as climbing a mountain.
