Perfectly hidden away on the Musandam Peninsula in the far north of Oman, and just an easy two-hour drive from Dubai, is the exquisite Six Senses Zighy Bay.

The Conde Nast Traveller magazine has included this as one of the Top Hotels in the World on the Gold List 2017, their definitive list of the very best properties there are. When you visit (and you should!), it is easy to see why they made the list.

Wherever you are based, Dubai is so well connected, making this small corner of paradise easy to reach yet somehow feeling very off-the-beaten-track. This bolthole is however a world apart from the style and ambience of the hotels and city of Dubai.

The combination of the dramatic, rugged beauty of Oman and the backdrop of the Hajar Mountains with the superb overall experience that Six Senses provide is a real winner. This is eco-rustic chic at its finest. Zighy Bay is unpretentious, genuine and simply a divine place to recharge the batteries.

Accommodation is, as one would expect spacious and extremely comfortable. Housed in traditional style stone villas, all have living areas and a private pool and some even an in-villa spa area for those extremely talented Six Senses therapists to work their magic.

All residents have their own GEM - Guest Experience Maker - and no matter how short or long your stay they will make sure that every moment is as you wish it to be.

There is so much to do here! If you are full of energy choose from paragliding, trekking, kayaking, rock climbing and mountain biking as well as snorkelling and diving.

A wonderful activity for a day is a Dhow Cruise exploring the small bays and tiny fishing villages located amongst the Fjords interspersed with snorkelling and kayaking, oh and of course a delicious gourmet lunch will be prepared for you to enjoy too. Of course, one could always just relax on the beach or by the pool!

Spa indulgence is at your fingertips whether in the heavenly spa or in your villa. Whether you are looking for an individual treatment or a whole detox plan, Six Senses experts will deliver, via both traditional and alternative therapies, addressing not only your physical state but also spiritual energies and rebalancing the mind.

Culinary creations here are a sheer delight for any foodie with options ranging from traditional Arabic cuisine to contemporary fine dining in stunning locations, particularly notable is the Sense on the Edge restaurant, where diners can enjoy awe-inspiring views to heighten the gastronomic experience. Top marks go to Zighy Bay for their supply of produce from their own organic garden and organic farm.

Children are warmly welcomed here at Zighy Bay, however there are some minimum age restrictions for some of the dining experiences. Children of any age (and their parents!) will be very happy here with a fabulous club for keeping younger children entertained. And then there is the holy grail of holiday plans for those with teenagers – a teen club to tear them away from their phones and tablets!

Six Senses Zighy Bay has huge character and feels distinctly Omani, something which cannot always be achieved easily in luxury hotels in the Middle East. Staff are delightful and utterly charming and there is a real feeling of soul here, which really shows to those who stay.

As if this can get any better, I love Zighy Bay especially because of their commitment to being socially responsible through their support of local charities and schools. Six Senses is outstanding in their dedication to setting and maintaining the benchmark for sustainable tourism.
