All senses are on high alert, they are only a few feet away. The enormous male silverback presides over the scene in front of him, eating whilst maintaining a watchful eye over his family and keeping track of the human visitors. It’s a breathtaking and incredibly humbling encounter: spending time in the presence of these magnificent animals, the mighty mountain gorillas – Africa’s largest primates. This is the moment you’ve been waiting for during a trip with Explorations to discover these critically endangered creatures in their spectacular jungle kingdom.
Gorilla trekking takes place in the Virunga Mountains which spread across the borders of Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Rwanda houses more than a third of the remaining mountain gorillas (a subspecies of the Eastern gorilla) left in the world and is well known for its outstanding opportunities to see the rare mountain gorilla high in the mountains.
Highlights of gorilla trekking in Rwanda
"There is little more captivating than the Volcanoes National Park where the gorilla families reside in the clearings of the bamboo forest."
Despite threats from poaching and human encroachment, numbers have increased in recent decades. Conservation awareness has risen significantly in Rwanda thanks to the legendary work of the late conservationist Dian Fossey. Today conservation efforts continue and visitors are welcomed on gorilla safari experiences where habituated families of mountain gorillas can be observed from a safe distance as they eat, play and groom. There is little more captivating than the Volcanoes National Park where the gorilla families reside in the clearings of the bamboo forest. The gorilla permits directly contribute towards the preservation of this incredible species and the rangers who protect and conserve their habitat.
In addition to gorilla trekking, we can arrange a golden monkey trek – offering the chance to encounter this rare primate species found in the highland bamboo forests of Central Africa. For a deeper, conservation-led perspective, guests can also engage with the work of Gorilla Doctors. Through fireside talks at select lodges, visits to their headquarters, or even the opportunity for a veterinarian to accompany your trek, you’ll gain unique insight into the protection and medical care of mountain gorillas in the wild. For those staying at Singita, a visit to Akarabo Nursery and Gardens can also be arranged. This community-led initiative focuses on reforestation and habitat restoration, where you can contribute by planting trees as part of your journey – supporting the long-term sustainability of gorilla ecosystems.

When to Go Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda
Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is possible year-round, with seasonal conditions shaping the experience. The drier periods from June to September and December to February generally offer more favourable trekking conditions, with clearer trails and easier hiking. The wetter months from March to May and October to November bring denser vegetation and more challenging terrain underfoot, but also fewer visitors and a more atmospheric forest environment.
Extend Your Rwanda Safari
A stay in Volcanoes National Park can be combined with other regions to create a broader and more varied journey through Rwanda. Nyungwe Forest National Park offers a contrasting rainforest setting with chimpanzee tracking and canopy walks, while Akagera National Park provides a classic savannah safari experience with the opportunity to see the Big Five. For a more relaxed pace, Lake Kivu offers lakeside scenery, boat trips and a quieter counterpoint to the intensity of trekking in the mountains.

FAQs
Should I go to Rwanda or Uganda for gorilla trekking?
Rwanda is often preferred for its accessibility and typically shorter trekking times, while Uganda can offer a more remote and often more cost-effective alternative. The right choice depends on your priorities in terms of comfort, budget and the level of physical challenge you are seeking. For more in-depth guidance, our Rwanda vs Uganda expert journal will provide further details.
What should I wear when gorilla trekking?
Clothing should be practical and protective. Long-sleeved tops and trousers help guard against dense vegetation, while sturdy waterproof hiking boots provide support on uneven and sometimes muddy terrain. A lightweight waterproof jacket is advisable, along with gloves for handling foliage during the trek.
Should I hire a porter when gorilla trekking?
Hiring a porter is strongly recommended. The terrain varies throughout the trek, and porters bring an exceptional understanding of the landscape – offering discreet, steady support that allows you to move with greater ease and confidence.
Even for fit and experienced hikers, a porter is invaluable. They can carry your daypack, allowing you to move freely and, importantly, to fully immerse yourself in your hour with the gorillas without distraction. Porters will remain just outside the viewing area, ready when you return – something many guests only fully appreciate in retrospect.
For those travelling with heavier camera equipment, their assistance is particularly beneficial. Beyond the practical advantages, hiring a porter also provides meaningful income to local communities. In our experience, the vast majority of travellers find it enhances the overall experience.
