Located in the heart of northeast Africa lies a country with awe-inspiring scenery and more pyramids than Egypt.

With a rich history dating back to ancient times, Sudan’s impressive monuments, archaeological sites and starkly beautiful landscapes offer a fascinating country to visit. With its fusion of Arabic and African cultures, it’s a relatively undiscovered destination with wonders to rival Egypt – without the crowds. Officially the ‘Republic of the Sudan’ is located at the southern reaches of the Sahara bordering seven countries and naturally divided by the River Nile. Early civilisations included the Kingdom of Kush, Meroe and Nobatia. Christianized in the 6th century, thereafter Islamised in the 15th century, it was heavily influenced by the cultures residing along the length of the Nile. To this day the Nile Valley holds many clues to the Egyptian and Meroitic civilisations with fascinating World Heritage archaeological sites protected by UNESCO.

"The rewards for visiting this lesser travelled country are great: a mesmerising land of mythical desert landscapes and glorious ancient dynasties."

Begin exploring Sudan with a visit to the glittering capital city of Khartoum, located at the confluence of the Blue and White Nile Rivers. The skyline is decorated with an increasing number of modern architectural feats contrasting with traditional buildings reflecting the cultural contrasts of this bustling metropolis. Soak up the atmosphere at the colourful Omdurman souks, and enjoy the warm hospitality of the people of Sudan whilst browsing the spice markets. Watch the spectacle of the religious Sufi ritual whilst enjoying the sounds of tambourines and the singing of Islamic worshippers who gather weekly. Don’t miss the National Museum of Sudan which houses the world’s most comprehensive Nubian collection and celebrates African art and archaeology across the centuries.

Further north lies the ancient city of Meroe, once the thriving Kushite capital until the empire collapsed in 400 A.D. Set against the rolling dunes and startling desert landscape lie over two hundred pyramids in scattered clusters. This is the location of Sudan’s best-preserved pyramids and whilst shorter in height than those of neighbouring Egypt, you’ll find unimpaired views of the site where rulers of the Kingdom of Kush are buried. Spend evenings at a tented camp surrounded by the mesmerising desert skies at night overlooking over forty of the beautiful pyramids of the Royal Cemetery of Meroe.

Lying on the third cataract of the Nile is the ancient town of Soleb containing a large necropolis with elaborate tombs and the ruins of a vast sandstone temple dating from the 18th century. Here you can discover frescoes and many important architectural sites from the Amarna Period. Beyond the sites of historical significance, the town and surrounding area around Karima are equally impressive. The smallest yet magnificent sacred mountain and UNESCO World Heritage Site of Jebel Barkal lies on the river’s curve, used as a distinctive rock landmark for traders over the centuries. Established around 1450 BC by Pharaoh Thutmose III, it’s still possible to visit the remains of Amun temples and palaces. Further elevating your experience, observe archaeologists on active dig sites where treasures are still being discovered. Take a trip with an expert in the Nubian area to learn about the ancient culture and birth of mankind. Visit the pristine landscapes and unvisited areas for a deeper insight into this fascinating nation.

Discuss with us your accommodation requirements and we’re confident we can find excellent options to suit. From small hotels made from locally hewn materials in the Nubian style at the foot of Jebel Barkal to colonial villas or the ultra-modern Corinthia Hotel in Khartoum, there is a wide range of accommodation available.

The rewards for visiting this lesser travelled country are great: a mesmerising land of mythical desert landscapes and glorious ancient dynasties. Perhaps combine a holiday to this remarkable destination with a trip to Kenya given the proximity of Nairobi, or Ethiopia which is only a short flight away.
