Why take a Zimbabwe walking safari in Mana Pools?

Covering 2,200 square kilometres in the far northwestern region of the country lies Mana Pools National Park. The Zambezi River dominates the landscape and winds along grassy floodplains and glistening pools that provide a rich environment for the surrounding wildlife. This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to a phenomenal range of wildlife including Cape buffalo, zebra, wild dog, lion, eland and hippo to name a few.

Mana is notable for its elephant herds that thrive in the riverine forest where they feast on the pods of Ana trees. The birdlife here will also capture your attention, from fish eagles to kingfishers hovering over shallow pools whilst egrets, jacana and crakes can be spotted on the banks of the river that is home to over 350 bird species.

Mana Pools is also one of the best places in Africa to observe packs of African wild dog on the hunt, a remarkable experience.

      Tailored private walking safari experiences

Our safari specialists will tailor the perfect Zimbabwe walking safari for you, whether you wish to base yourself in a single luxury camp and take guided short walks into the bush day, or take a more immersive multi-day walk between tented bush camps. The time you walk each day can be tailored to your preference and the other activities you wish to experience.

We recommend starting your walking safaris early in the morning to glimpse nocturnal animals before they disappear for the day, then return to camp for a late breakfast. Spend the day as you please – perhaps take a visit to a nearby village, artisan’s workshop or women’s empowerment project to meet local people and learn about their culture and lives.

Head out again in the late afternoon to watch buffalo and elephant herds drinking from the river in the before the sun sets, before dining under the stars surrounded by lanterns hanging from a nearby tree.

Greater depth: a multi-day walking safari in Zimbabwe

For a more adventurous and intrepid walking safari, opt for an authentic, owner-managed safari camp, owned by one of the finest guides in the country. You journey between tented bush camps with your expert private guide, with a dedicated crew moving ahead to set up a different camp each night in a stunning location.

What is the best time to take a walking safari in Zimbabwe?

Walking safaris in Mana Pools are best between June and October, Zimbabwe’s dry season. The driest months of July to September bring excellent game sightings as wildlife gathers at the remaining water sources. These conditions are ideal for walking safaris as the visibility of wildlife is much improved as the bush thins. These months are also excellent for canoeing and water based activities.
