Bespoke Rwanda Holidays
Situated just south of the Equator, tiny landlocked Rwanda is one of modern Africa’s most remarkable success stories. In the decades since the 1994 genocide, which claimed nearly a million lives and tore the country apart, Rwanda has transformed itself into one of the continent’s fastest-growing economies, a global leader in female political representation, and one of Africa‘s safest and most welcoming nations.
Wildlife and wild places are central to Rwanda’s continued revival. The country’s defining experience is gorilla trekking: just over 1,000 mountain gorillas survive in the wild, and a third of these live in the bamboo forests of the Virungas. More than a few of our clients have shed a tear on encountering these gentle, expressive creatures – a huge silverback tolerating tumbling youngsters, a nursing mother peering up in bemusement at a passing plane. It is like holding up a mirror and finding a reflection that is simultaneously other and familiar. We work only with the most experienced trackers and guides, dedicated professionals who maximise your chances of a sighting while offering fascinating glimpses of the conservation work behind it.
As compelling as the gorillas are, they are not Rwanda’s only draw. The country rewards deeper exploration: primates in montane forests, classic savannah wildlife, a great Rift Valley lake, and a capital city that provides essential cultural context. Rwanda’s compact geography, short transfers, excellent roads and a growing portfolio of superb lodges mean a visit here can be as comfortable, stylish and seamless as you like.

Where to Go in Rwanda?
Parc des Volcans / Volcanoes National Park
Rwanda’s defining wildlife destination. High in the bamboo forests of the Virungas, gorilla trekking offers the rare privilege of observing one of these remarkable families at close quarters. The region also rewards longer stays with golden monkey tracking, volcano hikes and some of the country’s finest lodges.
Nyungwe Forest National Park
A vast, high-altitude forest of cool air, sweeping views and extraordinary biodiversity. Home to around 500 chimpanzees and 12 other primate species, including the striking L’Hoest’s monkey. Guided walks are rewarding whether or not the chimps cooperate: orchids, waterfalls and abundant birdlife ensure they always are.
Akagera National Park
Rwanda’s only savannah ecosystem and a hauntingly beautiful contrast to the country’s forests. Thanks to the work of African Parks, wildlife numbers in Akagera have recovered dramatically. Elephants, buffalo, giraffe, topi, sitatunga and the stately eland roam freely, while the papyrus swamps harbour the prehistoric shoebill stork. Boat safaris on Lake Ihema complete the picture.
Lake Kivu
One of Africa’s great Rift Valley lakes, Kivu sits on Rwanda’s western border, its clear warm waters ringed by volcanoes. Many visitors spend a few restorative days here after gorilla trekking, unwinding in Gisenyi, Kibuye or Cyangugu before continuing south to Nyungwe. It is only ninety minutes from Volcanoes National Park and makes a natural, deeply rewarding addition to any itinerary.
Kigali
A diverse and vibrant capital that is an important part of understanding Rwanda properly. The Genocide Memorial is essential: an enormously powerful space that bears witness to the country’s resilience and spirit of reconciliation. Beyond this, Kigali’s markets and women-led craft enterprises offer a colourful and deeply human counterpoint to the country’s wildlife experiences.

"Whatever time of year you come, you’ll be sure to encounter more grace, poise and smiles than you’d ever imagined, and in the process learn a thing or two about mental fortitude."
When is the Best Time to Visit Rwanda?
The dry seasons, June to September and December to February, offer the most comfortable conditions for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking. The dry season is also the best time to find chimps in Nyungwe, when they descend to the forest floor in search of fruit. Akagera rewards visits year-round, and Rwanda’s compact geography means it is possible to combine regions with ease, whatever the season.
Make a Difference
Rwanda’s wildlife and wild places are central to the country’s continued recovery. From gorilla conservation in Volcanoes National Park to the remarkable rewilding story of Akagera, thoughtful travel here has a genuine and lasting impact.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Rwanda worth visiting for more than gorilla trekking?
Absolutely. Chimpanzees in Nyungwe, the Big Five in Akagera, Lake Kivu and Kigali make Rwanda a richly rewarding destination in its own right.
How long should I spend in Rwanda?
A short stay works well for gorilla trekking alone, but Rwanda is best appreciated as a circuit. Combining Volcanoes with Nyungwe, Akagera or Lake Kivu creates a beautifully balanced journey.
Is Rwanda good for a first gorilla safari?
Yes. It is one of the most accessible and comfortable places in Africa for gorilla trekking, with short transfers, excellent lodges and outstanding guiding.
Can I combine Rwanda with other destinations?
Rwanda pairs particularly well with Uganda for a primate-focused journey, or with Kenya and Tanzania for those wanting to add a classic safari.
