Rwanda Safaris - Extraordinarily special

Rwanda is an extraordinarily special country – not least because of its political history and devastation that the country faced in 1994. Peace was restored and the genocide is history, and over subsequent years Rwanda has transformed itself into a country whose people refer to themselves as one tribe.

Rwandese are extremely forward-thinking and positive. The minute one enters this country, one feels both completely privileged and humbled.

Known as a country of a thousand hills, the country’s vegetation is verdant and lush. Rwanda is best known as being one of only three countries where one can find mountain gorillas. These gentle giants live in the north western corner of the country in the volcanic area called the Virungas.

The lush and misty slopes are home to about 350 gorillas and trekking these magnificent animals on a gorilla safari in Rwanda is certainly one of the most thrilling and exciting wildlife experiences in Africa. There are also other areas of note in the country such as Nyungwe Natural Forest, the largest tract of montane forest in East or Central Africa, where chimpanzees can be seen along with 12 other species of primate and over 300 bird species.

Then there is Lake Kivu, one of the largest lakes in the Albertine Rift where one can spend a few days relaxing. Kigali is always interesting, with some really superb craft shops and markets. The women are always dressed in brightly coloured fabrics. Rwanda is easily added on to a holiday in Kenya, Uganda or Tanzania, too for a luxury bespoke safari.

Beautiful Lake Kivu

Located on Rwanda’s western border laying against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) lies a very deep and fairly mysterious lake called Lake Kivu. Kivu means lake in certain Bantu dialects. Whilst there are other lakes within Rwanda such as Burera, Ruhondo, Muhazi and Mugasera, Lake Kivu is the largest of all and is classed as one of the Great Lakes of the Rift Valley.
