Where to Go in Rwanda?
Parc des Volcans / Volcanoes National Park
Rwanda’s defining wildlife destination. High in the bamboo forests of the Virungas, gorilla trekking offers the rare privilege of observing one of these remarkable families at close quarters. The region also rewards longer stays with golden monkey tracking, volcano hikes and some of the country’s finest lodges.
Nyungwe Forest National Park
A vast, high-altitude forest of cool air, sweeping views and extraordinary biodiversity. Home to around 500 chimpanzees and 12 other primate species, including the striking L’Hoest’s monkey. Guided walks are rewarding whether or not the chimps cooperate: orchids, waterfalls and abundant birdlife ensure they always are.
Akagera National Park
Rwanda’s only savannah ecosystem and a hauntingly beautiful contrast to the country’s forests. Thanks to the work of African Parks, wildlife numbers in Akagera have recovered dramatically. Elephants, buffalo, giraffe, topi, sitatunga and the stately eland roam freely, while the papyrus swamps harbour the prehistoric shoebill stork. Boat safaris on Lake Ihema complete the picture.
Lake Kivu
One of Africa’s great Rift Valley lakes, Kivu sits on Rwanda’s western border, its clear warm waters ringed by volcanoes. Many visitors spend a few restorative days here after gorilla trekking, unwinding in Gisenyi, Kibuye or Cyangugu before continuing south to Nyungwe. It is only ninety minutes from Volcanoes National Park and makes a natural, deeply rewarding addition to any itinerary.
Kigali
A diverse and vibrant capital that is an important part of understanding Rwanda properly. The Genocide Memorial is essential: an enormously powerful space that bears witness to the country’s resilience and spirit of reconciliation. When is the Best Time to Visit Rwanda?
The dry seasons, June to September and December to February, offer the most comfortable conditions for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking. The dry season is also the best time to find chimps in Nyungwe, when they descend to the forest floor in search of fruit. Akagera rewards visits year-round, and Rwanda’s compact geography means it is possible to combine regions with ease, whatever the season.
