Réunion is somewhere very different and very special – offering inspiring scenery and a large variety of things to do for the active traveller who is looking for a more low-key, old-fashioned style of holiday. The most reasonably priced island in the Indian Ocean, it is still part of France.
For those who are interested in volcanoes, this island is a ‘must see’. With an almost permanently active volcano, the Piton de la Fournaise, one can see the bright red magma flowing under the laval crust. This island grows by up to 10 hectares each time there is an eruption! It does not boast beautiful beaches, but for Francophiles wanting more of an exploratory and walking holiday, this is the perfect island for you.
Scenically, it is far more interesting than its other Indian Ocean counterparts. There is primary forest to explore, too, perhaps on an African walking safari. The island is so fertile and green with waterfalls punctuating the vegetation. Renowned for its three cirques, the terrain lends itself to walkers and cyclists!
The small towns of Hell-Bourg and Cilaos are just beautiful, especially for anybody interested in French colonial and Creole architecture or walking. Tin houses, tin roofs, colonial-style filigree work everywhere – and empty streets. Réunion is super as both as an active holiday as well as somewhere to take children on a luxury family holiday to Africa.
