There are so many ideas we have, depending upon the ages of your children. Firstly, a private safari which is a tented mobile camp, erected just for your family with your own private vehicle and wonderful guide. The joy here, of course, is that one can explore and have complete flexibility and freedom to spend the days as one wishes – either in the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, Tarangire, Lake Eyasi, the Selous or Ruaha. A good combination is a tented camp for example in the Serengeti (and the guides are simply superb with children), and then perhaps staying at a plantation cottage in the Ngorongoro Highlands. Here there is a swimming pool, walks, mountain bikes and a huge amount of freedom and space to roam in a safe environment. The key is to combine a good mix of different experiences.
There is also horse-riding in the Serengeti and in Lake Manyara.
In the Rift Valley escarpment, in southern Tanzania, one can stay at a lovely, down-to-earth lodge in the mountains, where one can fly-fish, horse-ride, walk, mountain-bike, canoe and play golf. This is a perfect punctuation between wildlife safaris and rings the changes.
The other wonderful aspect is that Tanzania offers that perfect combination of some of the finest wildlife in Africa (including the wildebeest migration, which occurs in the Serengeti from around December to March), as well as that all-important in-depth cultural experience. One can spend time with the Maasai people, learning about their culture, or even stay at a tented camp in Lake Eyasi, which is simply gorgeous, with a swimming pool. Here one can learn about the Hadzabe tribe, who go out on hunts and one can accompany them, learning all about their culture.
Alternately, for families who want privacy or who are perhaps travelling with another family, we have private villas in the Selous overlooking the lake, as well as in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Apart from game-viewing by vehicle, one can also fish in the Selous. There are walking safaris in Tanzania too, but there is a minimum age.
One can then fly to the coast where there is a heady mix of culture, scenery, warm waters and every conceivable watersport under the sun – including the ever-popular kite-surfing! Stay in a private house or a luxury beach lodge. We also highly recommend taking a catamaran for at least three nights to a week, complete with skipper, so you can spend your days visiting different islands, swimming, snorkelling, scuba diving, waterskiing and fishing. There is also a treehouse to stay in and swimming with whale sharks. Some of the best scuba diving can be done in Tanzania, at one of the top ten dive sites.
