Beautiful tented camps and lodges

234-zimbabwe-1-1 tented camps lead.jpg

Luxury and comfort in the African environment, Zimbabwe certainly offers some wonderful accommodation in a variety of styles in safari and wilderness areas. In major areas of interest such as Victoria Falls one can find 5 star luxury hotels such as the colonial, iconic Victoria Falls Hotel, to the smaller boutique properties along the Zambezi River and gorge – boasting contemporary chic and elegance.

In more remote areas such as Mana Pools, Matusadona and Hwange, safari camps tend to be mostly small and personal with tented rooms – a traditional safari style. The average camp has six to eight tents so they are not only intimate but also place little impact on the environment. Tented camps often have solar heated water and solar lighting; all are moveable and so would only leave a small if any imprint on the earth if moved.

Some safari camps and lodges go several steps further offering inside and outside showers, willowy mosquito nets over four poster beds, mini bar and Persian rugs and are spacious and airy. They have an air of elegance, so this is not boy scout camping! Some semi permanent camps are less sophisticated offering safari bucket showers and bush loos, perfect for those who want to feel a bit closer to nature.

The camps and lodges are located in the best areas from which to explore and venture into the wilderness in search of the wildlife. Mostly they are not fenced allowing wildlife to roam at will, after all, this is their land and we are only the visitors for a few days.

There is nothing quite like lying in bed under starry nights listening to the hyena calling, the crickets chirping and then suddenly stopping, dead still and quiet, as a predator slinks by. The following morning you can read the ‘prints’ and spoor patterns in the sand to see who and what walked past your tent whilst you slept. Spend your siesta hours writing your journal with binoculars close to hand so that you can watch the wildlife, or just put it all aside and swing in a hammock on the deck in the shade.

Camps and lodges provide bases from which to explore – game drives and walking, fishing and boat rides, bird watching, canoe excursions and even horse riding but we also recommend that you take time out, relax and enjoy the ambience of Africa, and the actual camp, after all you are on holiday and often so much can be seen just from your veranda.

Or even game watch from the swimming pool or plunge pool – perfect for cooling off in the summer months. Often there may be a hide located close to camp or a sleep out deck – perfect for romantic dinners and a night under the stars. You awake at dawn with the birds hopping in the tree canopy above you.

Bliss eternal!
