Kenya Family Safaris

FAML005.jpg

These are amongst the very best tailormade safaris for families! Kenya offers so much – not only in terms of diversity of wildlife and the bonus of being able to visit parks north and south of the Equator, but also in scenery and the culture, which is so important and utterly natural, and, we feel, as important as the wildlife.

In Kenya, families can go on luxury safari and spend time at a private homestead, taking in some fishing, horse-riding, camel-trekking, walking, archery, clay pigeon shooting, swimming,  game drives, walks and masses of other activities. The opportunities are endless! We have several properties that close the lodge to one family or family group – enabling one to be very spoilt! Read our blog on family safaris in Kenya

In Samburu and Maasai Mara National Parks, we have two lodges where in between game drives, the Samburu or Maasai tribesmen teach children how to make their own fires, basket-weaving, beading, face-painting, how to make and use bows and arrows and all the bushlore that accompanies these activities. We also have a Samburu and a Maasai warrior’s programme that a family can do together, where you walk out with the Maasai or Samburu for a day and learn about their culture and what it takes to become a warrior. We can also take your family to visit a school, should you be interested, or to a manyatta, which is a Maasai home, where the children can learn Maasai or Samburu dancing and beading, and interact with other children.

For a family luxury safari, we can arrange a private vehicle and get one of these guides to accompany you, so you can be together, and still gain all this knowledge! We also arrange camel treks with the nomadic Samburu tribes, which is seriously good fun! These can be from three days to a week, depending upon the age and interests of the family. Then one can swim in the rivers or splash about in the rock pools. Many of the homesteads and ranches have horse-riding that we can incorporate too, or you can go out on a riding safari! There is also great fishing on Mount Kenya, where you can stay in a log cabin. We can then add on the coast where we have some beautiful private villas directly on the beach! We also have dhows that you can sail on for a night or three, or even catamarans that you can go out on for four or five nights, for those families who are keen on snorkelling and diving! Otherwise, there is a lovely lodge that we use which has more watersports than one can ever imagine, including kite-surfing.

If you don’t want to go to the coast, then Kenya has an abundance of lakes to be on which are equally good fun and simply lovely.

We can arrange tented mobile camps on one of our private safaris for your family, complete with private guide and vehicle, for you to stay at private homes for a more intimate experience, or for you to stay at a traditional tented camp or lodge. We also have some truly spectacular villas for our clients throughout the country.

A Kenya family safari done properly will never be inexpensive, but all of our clients have returned saying that it was the experience of a lifetime and a foundation from which their children have built enthusiasm and a love of Africa!
