Walking Safaris in Tanzania

10-walking-safaris-in-tanzania-1-1 lead.jpg

Tanzania really lends itself to walking safaris. In the Selous, which is Africa’s largest game reserve, situated in southern Tanzania, one can walk through this breathtaking, pretty, primeval scenery privately on an individual basis which is fantastic, and there is the opportunity to fly-camp, too for just a night for those who simply want a taster of walking safari!

The Selous is magnificent, home to large herds of elephant and renowned for its wild dog population, Africa’s most efficient predator. To observe their highly orchestrated hunting ritual is a sight of artistry.  The Selous offers such diverse scenery and vegetation, from its doum palms to its lakes, to the mighty Rufiji River and simply this vast expanse of Africa!

To walk in this region is a real privilege. One can either walk from a camp or a luxury lodge for a day, or fly camp for a night  on a bedroll beneath a gauze net, or perhaps have a fully, accompanied safari, complete with porters and a small camp erected for you as you walk from area to area, taking in the  gorgeous scenery surrounding you.

Or there is also game-rich Ruaha, which is truly wonderful, where one walks on an individual basis, again accompanied by your professional guide. The tents are lightweight fly tents in the Selous and dome tents in Ruaha. Ruaha is very different to the Selous and is rich in wildlife, including lion, leopard and of course, wild dog.  Perhaps spend two or three nights camping out in the wilds with your professional guide, one of the best in Africa.

These areas complement one another and are so different both in terms of vegetation, scenery and wildlife. There is also Katavi National Park which is fabulous to walk in and this you can do on a daily basis or fly-camp for a couple of nights which I thoroughly recommend! A fly-camp is erected just for you and you are the only people sleeping in the park, watching the birds come in to roost.

Walking is also conducted in Northern Tanzania in the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Highlands. This is individually tailored around each of our clients and accommodation is in large, comfortable tents, with en suite loo and shower. Not only does this allow one to stretch one’s legs and really feel a part of Africa, but the emphasis is on the cultural interaction between yourself and your guides.

This is one of the highlights of northern Tanzania! One learns so much more on foot and there is no noise or smell of pollution. The Serengeti really is archetypal Africa, with its infinite savannah plains and heart stopping views, together with the finest wildlife experience that exists in Africa!  Click here for our further information on our walking safaris or contact us for further information.
