Where to stay for a Kenya beach holiday

Watamu & Lamu: adventure, culture, and barefoot luxury

On the north coast, Watamu shines as a destination that offers a little of everything – from kitesurfing, snorkelling, and deep-sea fishing to yoga sessions, dhow cruises (overnight options are available for something adventurous!), and lively evenings at its bars and restaurants. Families love the shallow waters of Watamu Marine Park, while couples can indulge in sunset dhow sails across Mida Creek or tranquil spa treatments. For wildlife lovers seeking unforgettable experiences, whale watching and dolphin encounters (seasonally dependent) create truly memorable moments.

A little further north, the Lamu Archipelago feels like stepping back in time. With no cars and winding alleyways steeped in history, it’s a place of timeless Swahili charm Peponi Hotel, with its elegant suites and beachfront location on Shela Beach, is a timeless choice for honeymooners looking for a boutique retreat. Families will feel at home at Manda Bay Lodge, where its laid-back charm, watersports, dhow sailing, and beachside activities keep all ages entertained. For complete privacy, Forodhani House offers a stunning villa right on the water, with spacious living areas, a private pool, and personalised service, allowing you to savour each day at your own pace.

“Palm-fringed beaches, warm waters, and a vibrant Swahili culture create an idyllic backdrop for rest and rejuvenation.”

Kilifi: secluded sands and elegant villas

South of Watamu, Kilifi is quieter and more understated, ideal for travellers looking for space and privacy with a touch of barefoot luxury. Sirai Beach is a private cliff-top home set within tropical gardens offering impeccable service, while for those seeking flexible stays with a more homely touch, Kilifi Beach Villas and Kilifi Beach House are excellent options – fully serviced homes where your private chef can prepare freshly caught seafood or source from the local markets based on your wishes.

With wide sandy beaches, dhow sailing, and a laidback atmosphere, Kilifi is where travellers come to slow down and savour the coast at their own rhythm.

Diani Beach: white sands and exclusive retreats

Further south, Diani Beach is one of the most iconic stretches of sand in Kenya. Its dazzling coastline makes it ideal for both family adventures and romantic escapes. The stylish Alfajiri Villas are among the most luxurious on the coast, offering complete privacy and personal service, while Kinondo Kwetu offers fun activities for families and couples alike, from yoga to horse riding and watersports, all set on a secluded stretch of Galu Beach. Beyond this, Kinondo Kwetu embraces its wider purpose through the Kinondo Kwetu Trust Fund, which supports local schools and families in Kinondo village.

With its mix of world-class luxury and family-friendly activities, Diani is one of the most versatile and rewarding destinations for a Kenya beach holiday.

Best Time to take a holiday on the Kenyan Coast

The Kenyan coast is warm year-round, but we recommend December, January, and February as the ideal months to visit. Skies are clear, the days are hot, and there are ideal conditions for swimming, snorkelling, and long, lazy beach days.

That said, most of the year is wonderful. Just note that April, May, and November can bring some rain, though you’ll often still get sunshine between showers. Whether it’s a festive-season escape or a quieter coastal retreat later in the year, there’s always a good time to plan your luxury Kenya safari and beach holiday.
