Where to Go in Zimbabwe?
Hwange National Park
Covering more than 14,600 sq km, Hwange National Park is Zimbabwe’s largest reserve and one of southern Africa’s great safari regions. It is particularly well known for its huge elephant herds, as well as lion, cheetah, zebra and buffalo. Open plains, teak forests and wildlife-rich waterholes make it ideal for a classic safari with exceptional guiding.
Mana Pools
In the far north, Mana Pools is one of Africa’s most atmospheric safari destinations. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is ideal for canoe and walking safaris along the Zambezi River, where elephant, hippo, crocodile, lion and prolific birdlife are all part of the experience. It particularly suits travellers looking for a more active and immersive safari.
Lake Kariba and Matusadona
Lake Kariba offers a slower safari rhythm, with sunset cruises, kayaking, fishing and beautiful wildlife viewing from the water. Along its shores, Matusadona adds elephant, buffalo, lion and birdlife in a remote and striking setting. Together, they work well for travellers seeking scenery, water-based experiences and a strong sense of escape.
Gonarezhou National Park
Gonarezhou, in the south-east, is one of Africa’s great hidden wilderness areas. Known as “the place of elephants”, it is defined by large herds, very few visitors and the dramatic red sandstone Chilojo Cliffs. It is a rewarding choice for seasoned safari travellers drawn to remoteness, scale and solitude.
Victoria Falls
One of the world’s largest waterfalls, Victoria Falls is one of Zimbabwe’s defining highlights. Admire its force from several viewpoints or add white-water rafting, helicopter flights or a Zambezi cruise. The surrounding area also offers wildlife, birdlife and some of the country’s most iconic places to stay.
Great Zimbabwe
Great Zimbabwe adds cultural and historical depth to a journey through the country. This UNESCO World Heritage Site, from which Zimbabwe takes its name, was once a major trading centre and remains one of Africa’s most important archaeological monuments.
When is the Best Time to Visit Zimbabwe?
Zimbabwe is a rewarding destination for much of the year, with the best time to visit depending on the regions and experiences you want to prioritise.
June to October is generally best for safari in Hwange, Mana Pools and Gonarezhou, when wildlife gathers around rivers and waterholes, and walking and canoeing are at their strongest. April and May are also beautiful, with greener landscapes and fewer visitors.
From November to March, the green season brings lush scenery and excellent birdlife, though some remote camps may close depending on rainfall. Victoria Falls is usually at its most powerful from February to May, while lower water levels later in the year can improve views into the gorge and make some activities easier.
