Luxury Family Holidays in Beautiful Bhutan

religious festivals.jpg

Bhutan may not be the first country in Asia that people think of travelling to for a family holiday, but in truth, there is no reason why it shouldn’t be!

The climate is quite wonderful and even in the coldest months of January and February, the days are still warm enough to wear a t-shirt and enjoy blue, cloudless days – even if the temperatures plummet in the mornings and evenings. We feel that holidays in Bhutan really do offer the perfect, uncommercial, non-westernised holiday!

For families who enjoy walking, there are endless numbers of walks with the most enchanting scenery, enveloped by the high mountains of the Himalaya and a lovely picnic will be set out for you. For those who want to be a bit more intrepid, there is a walk to Bumdra, which is a basic camp right at the top of a mountain for the night!

For those who enjoy cycling, we have the most fabulous cycling in Paro – and the best bit, is that there is a car behind that will always carry your bike, should you feel a hill get too much for you! Finally, there is rafting in Punakha on the River Mo and the River Pho. This is an exhilarating trip and you can raft and kayak each day, staying at a charming, rustic camp whilst there.

Venture on to the interior and Bumthang, where you can see women weaving rugs, jerseys and jackets. Here you can see a bee-keeping project, as well as a cheese-making factory, a cider and an apple juice factory, and a beer-making factory (all inspired by a Swiss man, married to a Bhutanese lady!).

Visit schools, too, and see how the children are being taught, and learn about the thirteen arts and crafts that Bhutan’s economy revolves around. Spend time in Thimphu, where one can see these arts and crafts (including women weaving a wedding garment that might take six months to make) as well as an old farmhouse where they have farming implements that are 100 years old – some still in use today.

Then there are the people – simply the most wonderful, gentle, friendly people one could possibly hope to meet. There are always festivals going on throughout the year that are interesting and fun, too. For a truly different, fun, exciting family holiday, you simply cannot beat holidays in Bhutan!
