      Overview Journeys Experiences

      Exclusive Holidays to Turkey (Türkiye)

Shaped by empires and cultures spanning millennia, it moves from Istanbul’s Byzantine domes and Ottoman minarets to Cappadocia’s fantastical rock formations, ancient ruins and the brilliant waters of the Aegean and Mediterranean. Few destinations offer such a vivid meeting of East and West.

If this is your first visit, start with the classics. Istanbul spans two continents, its skyline shaped by the domes and minarets of centuries past. Further south, Ephesus brings ancient history to life, while inland Cappadocia’s fairy chimneys are best seen floating above the landscape at dawn. Finish on the Turquoise Coast, drifting between secluded coves aboard a traditional wooden boat.

For returning travellers, a deeper exploration reveals a very different Turkey. The Black Sea coast and northern Anatolia are greener, quieter and steeped in character, from Safranbolu’s elegant Ottoman mansions and Amasra’s historic harbour to Amasya’s dramatic river valley. Further inland, the monumental ruins of Hattusa and the cosmopolitan energy of Ankara offer contrasting glimpses of Turkey’s ancient heritage and modern identity.

      Where to go in Turkey

      Istanbul

view of the sultanahmet mosque in istanbul through an archway

Istanbul balances old and new with an electric energy all its own. Stroll spice markets and savour Turkish coffee in labyrinthine bazaars, stand beneath the vast dome of Hagia Sophia and explore the sprawling Topkapi Palace, both testament to Istanbul’s imperial past. Hilly neighbourhoods roll down to former palaces and mansions on the Bosphorus, the waterway that divides Europe from Asia. Get lost, get found, and feast on local cuisine along the way.

      Cappadocia

view of uchisar village in cappadocia in turkey

In the heart of the country, Cappadocia unfolds in shifting bands of beige, grey, red and dusty pink, its fairy chimneys, hidden valleys and open plains forming one of the most otherworldly landscapes you’ll cross anywhere. Rising above it at dawn in a hot air balloon is magical, but the region rewards slower exploration too, on foot or by bike, drifting between historic towns and along scenic trails.

      Ephesus

ancient library of celsus in ephesus turkey

Turkey is rich in ancient ruins, but Ephesus is one of the best preserved. Original stone streets wind past temples, squares, amphitheatres, baths and houses. Parts of this UNESCO World Heritage Site are still being excavated, yet there is already more than enough to give you a real feel for life in classical times.

      The Turquoise Coast and Bodrum

traditional turkish gulet on the ocean

Turkey’s south-western coast is made for slowing down. From Bodrum and the Aegean bays to Fethiye and the Lycian coast, it is a landscape of pine-clad hills, turquoise water and hidden coves. Long described as Turkey answer to the French Riviera, the Bodrum Peninsula is where old-world glamour meets the Aegean. Base yourself at a beachside hotel, or take to the water aboard a private gulet. Ancient ruins, exceptional restaurants and boutiques are all within easy reach of the shore.

The Black Sea and northern Anatolia

      town of amasra in turkey

Life here is slower and deeply traditional, a world away from Turkey southern coast. Inland, Safranbolu’s distinctive red-roofed Ottoman mansions preserve another era, while Amasra’s ancient fortress overlooks a harbour of fishing boats. Further east, Amasya sits within a narrow river gorge, its historic houses and rock-cut tombs of Pontic kings lining the slopes above the Yeşilırmak River.

      Troy and northwestern Anatolia

      martyrs memorial at gallipoli turkey

For those drawn to the ancient world, northwestern Turkey is home to Troy and its excavation site, one of the most storied ruins in Western history. Nearby, the Troy Museum brings the site to life, gathering artefacts into a single, striking building close to the ruins. Combine it with the Gallipoli peninsula and the Ida Mountains, known for their pine forests, waterfalls and links to Homer’s Iliad, for a journey through ancient legends, battlefield history and mountain landscapes.

      Hattusa and Ankara

the pair of lion carvings making the lion gate in hittite of hattusa

Hattusa, once capital of the Hittite Empire, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of monumental gates, sacred temples and ancient stone carvings. Ankara, Turkey modern capital, is a useful gateway to Anatolia, with the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations and the ancient citadel offering a glimpse into the region’s deep history.

When is the best time to visit Turkey?

Turkey can be visited year-round, though the ideal time depends on your itinerary.

Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are particularly good for combining Istanbul with Cappadocia, Ephesus and other inland sights, with comfortable temperatures for exploring.

Summer (July and August) is the time for the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts, when warm seas and long days are ideal for swimming and cruising. Inland, temperatures can be high.

Winter brings cooler weather and fewer visitors. Istanbul is atmospheric at this time of year, while Cappadocia can be cold and snowy, lending its landscapes an entirely different character.
