The Journey:
Exploring the capital
Kuala Lumpur
Begin your Borneo wildlife adventure in Malaysia’s exciting capital city Kuala Lumpur. As well as being a great place to break the long journey to Borneo, this modern metropolis offers plenty to engage you. Explore Kuala Lumpur’s vibrant mix of cultures and architecture—from historic Chinese shophouses to grand British colonial buildings and modern art scenes. Then gasp at the cavity skyline views from the top of the dazzling Petronas Twin Towers, before diving into the capital’s rich culinary scene as you explore the city’s top street food offerings with your private guide.
Sun bears and flying squirrels
Sepilok
A short morning flight to Sandakan will bring you to world-famous Sepilok in time for lunch. From your comfortable base at Sepilok Forest Edge Resort, you’ll visit the Rainforest Discovery Centre – an excellent place to be introduced to the Bornean rainforest – making your way along the canopy walkway to take in the tremendous forest views and watch for flying squirrels to emerge from their nests at dusk. Continue on to a private night walk in search of nocturnal creatures before returning to your lodge for dinner. You’ll also have the opportunity for a private meeting with the founder of the Borneo Sun Bear Rehabilitation Centre and gain a deeper understanding of the world’s smallest bear and the conservation efforts under way to protect these adorable and endangered creatures.
Orangutans and pygmy elephants
Kinabatangan River
Flying to Sandakan, you’ll board a boat for the river journey to Kinabatangan Wetlands Lodge. The forests, wetlands, and mangroves here support some of Borneo’s most iconic and vulnerable species and, in recent years, has become one of Borneo’s very best wildlife spots. With your private guide, experience Borneo’s remarkable biodiversity up close. Among the most prominent are proboscis monkeys, unique to Borneo, easily recognizable by their distinctive large noses and often seen in groups along the riverbanks. Orangutans are frequently spotted in the forest canopy, while Bornean pygmy elephants, the smallest elephant subspecies, are occasionally seen grazing near the river or crossing its waters.
Rare cats and primates
Sungai Kapur
The rainforests and coastal mangroves of newly designated Borneo’s Virgin Jungle Reserve are an exceptional place to search for iconic species such as proboscis monkeys, orangutans and sun bears, as well as rarities such as the clouded leopard, Irrawaddy dolphin and helmeted hornbill. Based at Utan Rainforest Lodge, explore the reserve with your guide by boat and on foot. Wildlife hides offer opportunities to photograph sought-after species like the Borneo ground-cuckoo and view what’s been captured on the camera traps. Night safaris here are especially rewarding with slow loris, tarsier and leopard cat sightings all possible.
Deep forest
Danum Valley
Around 130 million years old, the Danum Valley is the archetypal primary rainforest of your imagination. Giant trees tower up to 100 metres above you, and there are endless plant species to marvel at. No trip to Borneo would be complete without experiencing this critically important wildlife sanctuary, and award-winning Borneo Rainforest Lodge is without doubt the place to stay. The valley has the highest concentration of wild orangutans in the world (around 500 live here) and is also an important refuge for pygmy elephant and clouded leopard. Accompanied by your expert guide, walk the jungle trails in search of wildlife, and explore the thrilling canopy walk, best experienced as the gibbons are summoning up the dawn.

Great journeys need great places to lay your head. These are our tried and tested suggestions.
Villa Samadhi
Hidden away in a quiet Kuala Lumpur neighbourhood, Villa Samadhi is a rare escape from the city’s noise. This intimate 21-room boutique hotel blends traditional Malay design with modern comforts—think timber beams, deep tubs, and rooms opening onto a lagoon-style pool. The Luxe Crib features a private plunge pool and rooftop garden. Dining is relaxed, with Malaysian and Western dishes served poolside at Mandi-Mandi. Just minutes from KL’s centre, yet blissfully secluded, Villa Samadhi offers a serene, slow-paced retreat that feels far removed from urban life.
Sepilok Forest Edge Retreat
Located a short stroll from the world-famous Orangutan Centre, Sepilok Forest Edge Retreat offers an intimate introduction to the Bornean rainforest. Its standout glamping tents—set on raised decks apart from the main property, with proper beds and en-suite bathrooms—are a meaningful extension of the forest: a way to sleep within it, listen to it, and feel its rhythm without the buffer of concrete or glass. Evenings bring lantern-lit paths and cicada song, while dawn is ushered in by the distant call of gibbons. Delicious meals are served in an open-air restaurant overlooking a lily pond.
Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort
Located in a superbly productive wildlife area on Sabah’s lower Kinabatangan River, Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort’s rustic wooden chalets offer eco-conscious design, simple comforts and a way to appreciate the wildlife away from the crowds that flock upriver. Excellently guided private river cruises and jungle walks reveal orangutan, proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephant and other rare wildlife. As night falls, the star-studded sky and the river’s gentle flow invite quiet reflection, far removed from the modern world’s rush.
Utan Rainforest Lodge
Located in Borneo’s newly created Virgin Jungle Reserve, where the lowland rainforest meets coastal mangroves, Utan Rainforest Lodge offers access to a wide range of Borneo specialties including sun bear, helmeted hornbill and the incredibly rare Irrawaddy river dolphin. Every morning, wake to the sounds of gibbons and hornbills calling before heading out to explore the trails or waterways. The 14 air-conditioned rooms, dotted amongst the rainforest, provide a comfortable base, and there is an excellent restaurant, and a pool for cooling off after your wildlife adventures.
Borneo Rainforest Lodge
Dwarfed by the sky-scraping dipterocarp rainforest of Borneo’s iconic Danum Valley and accessible only by light aircraft or a rugged drive, Borneo Rainforest Lodge feels a million miles from civilisation. The lodge’s 30 private chalets and villas, with their expansive glass windows, open-air verandas, and the forest sounds ever-present, immerse you directly into nature without sacrificing luxury. By day, explore the canopy walkway and vast network of trails or search for orangutans and rare birds along the river, while guided night safaris offer the thrilling possibility of clouded leopard and slow loris.
Hyatt Centric Kota Kinabalu
