Travel from rural Rajasthan to sacred deodar forests in the Himalaya on a journey of mindfulness and personal discovery. From dawn yoga and ayurvedic spa treatments to guided meditations and cleansing fire rituals led by expert practitioners, you’ll experience not only sacred India at its most inspiring, but a deeper connection with the land, with others and with yourself.
While the window for combining Rajasthan and the Himalaya is relatively short, travelling in these months avoids extremes in heat, rain and cold. Holi, usually held in early March, is a particularly wonderful time to travel. November to April are the months for spotting tigers in Corbett National Park.

Temple Energy
Jaipur
Begin your exploration of Jaipur with a walk accompanied by Himanshu Verma, a leading art curator who knows Jaipur’s temples like few others. You’ll gain a privileged appreciation of Jaipur’s spiritual life, and experience the phenomenal energy and joie-de-vivre of the city’s worship rituals as you visit the city’s most intriguing Krishna and Shiva temples. Break for tea at a top street-side coal-fired chai vendor, before heading just outside the city to visit the Sun Temple and Galta temple complex with its marvellous views over the Pink City. After a delicious organic lunch at restaurant sensation White Sage, spend a rewarding afternoon in Himanshu’s art studio, enjoying his eclectic private collection of traditional and contemporary Indian art and a pranayama meditation on one of the paintings.
Rhythms of Rural Rajasthan
Ajabgarh
In the Aravalli Hills a couple of hours from Jaipur, you’ll find the rose-hued domes and vaulted Mughal arches of Amanbagh. Once the staging area for royal tiger hunts, today it’s a serene retreat in the heart of atmospheric countryside dotted with abandoned forts, temples and traditional Rajasthani villages. A real highlight is the chance to join, as dusk falls, friendly local villagers bringing their goat, cattle and buffalo herds home after a day’s grazing. Enjoy a guided meditation or yoga session among the atmospheric ruins of Bhangarh—one of India’s unsung jewels. Or experience evening ceremonial prayers at the exquisite eleventh-century temple of Narayani Mata and let the accompanying bells and gongs cleanse you—a deeply moving experience.
Devotion by the Ganges
Rishikesh
Gateway to the Garhwal Himalaya, Rishikesh has long attracted seekers drawn by its position on the sacred Ganges and its plenitude of ashrams and yoga centres. At the Taj Rishikesh, enjoy the warm oils, herbal treatments and sense of renewal brought by its Jiva spa, and let your mornings begin along the Ganges with dawn yoga followed by an unhurried breakfast as you consider the day ahead. Venture into town for a gentle stroll across Lakshman Jhula to take in the broad Himalayan vistas, before wandering through the Beatles Ashram to enjoy its quietly fading murals. Come evening, aarti at Parmarth Niketan, with its flickering lamps and chants rising over the river, is a must.
Song of the Forest
Corbett National Park
The journey by road from Rishikesh to Binsar is beautiful but long. Around mid distance however, the forests of Kumaon offer a fabulous opportunity to experience the natural world at its most healing. At the inspiring Aahana Resort, feel yourself being nourished by nature as you learn the art of forest bathing, surrender to a spa treatment using local botanicals, or commit to some yoga and meditation practice. As you are here, it would be remiss not to include some time in nearby Corbett National Park where, with a touch of luck on your side, you’ll have the thrilling opportunity to see a wild tiger.
A Divine Sanctuary
Binsar
Climbing deeper into Kumaon, you’ll eventually arrive at the wonderfully remote hilltop retreat of Nine Furlongs, 8,000 feet up in the Himalaya. Luminaries like Bob Dylan, Timothy Leary and Uma Thurman have beaten a path here, and you’ll soon see why as you relax on the lawn in front of your rustic stone cottage, hot cup of chai in hand, gazing across to snow-covered Nanda Devi slowly blushing in the setting sun—surely one of the finest views in India. If you’d like to be active, there are trails through the mountains to traditional Kumaoni villages and country temples, birds and other wildlife to spot in the forest, and picnics set up for you in whichever location you wish. However, a stay at Nine Furlongs is really about slowing down, embracing the dolce far niente vibe, and drinking in your sublime surroundings. So linger in bed a little longer in the morning, have that extra cup of tea and just bliss out.
Where you'll stay
Great journeys need great places to lay your head. These are our tried and tested suggestions.
Oberoi Rajvilas
Staying at the Oberoi Rajvilas in the Pink City of Jaipur feels like stepping into a serene, storybook vision of Rajasthan. Offering thoughtful service, privacy and a sense of peace that is rare so close to the Pink City, the property spreads across landscaped gardens, where peacocks strut between fountains and centuries-old trees. Rooms and villas come with carved arches, hand-painted frescoes and Mughal-inspired courtyards, while an original haveli, reimagined as a spa, is perfumed with essential oils and lit by flickering diyas.
Amanbagh
Set among a former maharaja’s hunting grounds in the countryside two hours from Jaipur, and now reimagined with Aman’s signature pared-back elegance, Amanbagh is a place to steep yourself in the slow rhythms of rural Rajasthan. Its sweeping domes, sandstone colonnades and frangipani-shaded courtyards feel timeless, as if it has always belonged here. While there are endless options to divert yourself, on a tiger safari at nearby Sariska, exploring crumbling forts in the Aravalli Hills or enjoying sunrise yoga in the gardens, the real draw of Amanbagh is how the outside world recedes.
Taj Rishikesh
Set above a quiet bend of the Ganges outside Rishikesh, Taj Rishikesh Resort & Spa offers a wonderful blend of Himalayan stillness and understated luxury. The retreat feels more like a private village than a resort—tiered stone-clad villas grace the hillside, each opening to views of the rushing river and forested ridges. Mornings begin with sunlight pouring over the peaks, best savoured with a cup of local chai on your balcony. Afternoons might be spent in the spa, where therapies draw from age-old Himalayan wellness traditions, or by the infinity pool, where the Ganges seems close enough to touch.
Aahana Resort
Aahana Resort, on the edge of Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand, stands as one of northern India’s more sophisticated examples of responsible luxury. Close enough to Corbett to allow an early-morning tiger safari, this sustainably operated retreat is all about connecting with the rhythms of the natural world through Ayurvedic spa treatments using local botanicals, organic farm-to-table dining and forest bathing sessions. Thoughtfully designed stone facades, timbered verandas and wide picture windows open towards the forest, where the morning is greeted with the calls of hornbills and evening settles into the hum of the jungle.
Nine Furlongs
Perched on a ridge in Kumaon with unbroken views of Nanda Devi and snowcapped Himalayan peaks, Nine Furlongs is a well-kept secret. The air is redolent with pine, and the quiet almost tangible, broken only by the calls of mountain birds and the occasional rustle of wind through the deodar trees. Once a colonial hunting lodge, it has been carefully restored without losing its rustic soul. Wide verandas frame snow-peaked horizons; evenings stretch out lazily in front of the fire with books, conversation and Kumaoni meals prepared with seasonal ingredients from the nearby villages. There’s an intimacy here, with only a handful of rooms, that makes every stay feel private and unhurried.
Imperial Hotel
New Delhi’s Imperial Hotel, with its timeless charm, flawless service and outstanding central location, is the Indian capital’s most iconic hotel, hosting diplomats, celebrities, and the most discerning of travellers. From its marble lobby floors and private art collections to its manicured gardens, restaurants and enormous spa, everything is exactly as it should be. If you want–or are used to getting–the maharajah or maharani treatment, look no further than the Imperial.
