Your Southern Morocco Journey Itinerary
Gateway to the Desert
Marrakech
Your journey begins with two nights in Marrakech at Riad Tarabel, an exquisitely stylish riad-style hotel in the historic medina. Just a few steps away, you can barter for treasures in the souk, then snack on pigeon pastilla in the Jemaa el-Fna among acrobats and belly-dancers. To find tranquility amid the chaos, head to Jardin Majorelle, a wonderland of greens, blues and yellows bequeathed to Marrakech by Yves Saint Laurent. And to find out more about the designer’s time in the country, there’s a wonderful museum dedicated to him.
Among the Argan Groves
Azrarag
Leaving Marrakech, drive south toward the gentle hills of the Argan Valley, retracing the route of the old camel trains to Timbuktu. La Maison des Arganiers offers a breathtaking and peaceful first pause, surrounded by open landscapes and small villages where the scent of argan wood drifts through the air. Enjoy an unhurried afternoon settling into the slower rhythms of the south, as you take a stroll through the nearby groves, enjoy a massage and enjoy a Moroccan feast on the terrace.
An Ancient Oasis
Tighmert
Driving south along the Atlantic coast, stop to explore the dramatic rock arches of Legzira Beach and enjoy an ocean swim. Then, continuing through increasingly arid landscapes, arrive in the oasis settlement of Tighmert where La Maison de L’Oasis awaits. Here dates ripen in the sun, watered by irrigation channels weaving through the fields. Bread-making with village women, gentle hikes and palm-grove walks bring you into the cadence of everyday life. A short walk or mule ride away is an ancient grain store, set on a hill overlooking Amtoudi village below, where lunch will be served. This fascinating building is one of the oldest and best preserved grain stores in North Africa, providing an insight into the history of Morocco. From this spectacular vantage point, admire the surrounding desert mountain landscapes and green fields of Amtoudi’s farmland.
Edge of the Sand Sea
Fam El Hisn
Moving ever deeper into southern Morocco, the landscape opens into the vast silence of the Sahara. Close to the Algerian border, set beneath a lone acacia tree at the foot of the western edge of a sand sea, you arrive at Acacia Camp. As at all the other Memory Road properties, there are no fixed schedules. Spend your time exploring the area’s wide desert valleys, dry riverbeds and acacia groves that offer natural shade and moments of pause. Guided walks reveal the subtle details of the terrain—shifting sands, desert flora and the stories embedded in ancient routes once used by nomadic traders. Camel treks provide a deeper connection to the scale and solitude of the region. As temperatures cool, evenings are spent around the fire, with Moroccan cuisine, storytelling and music under the stars, and an extraordinary sense of remoteness once night falls.
Crafts and Cuisine
Awju Valley
Turning back towards the Atlas, you’ll arrive at Maison Rouge in the Awju Valley. The surrounding landscapes invite slow, attentive exploration. Footpaths wind through farmland, walnut and almond groves, and up into the hills, offering walks with local guides that reveal both the scale of the mountains and the intimacy of village life. Spend time learning about traditional farming, craftsmanship and the local cuisine, often involving seasonal ingredients sourced directly from the village or nearby fields. The meals you share with the villagers become a natural point of storytelling and connection.
A Lost Way of Life Regenerated
Tizkmoudine
Abandoned for decades, the restored village of Tizkmoudine is simply magical. Given new life through a long‑term collaboration between the local community, the Global Heritage Fund, and the Memory Road, Tizkmoudine’s atmospheric earthen homes, narrow alleys, mosque and communal spaces now offer a privileged space for authentic interactions with the local Amazigh people and heritage. Activities in and around the village are immersive and centred on community connection. Join the women of the weaving cooperative for demonstrations and conversations about their weaving techniques. Bake traditional bread in clay ovens, or share stories over mint tea with locals in the village square. For nature lovers, explore the surrounding palm grove and ancient irrigation channels that feed the oasis, and soak up views of the desert edge at dawn and dusk. Staying here isn’t about modern amenities—it’s about fully experiencing Morocco’s living heritage from within its own rhythms and stories.
Paradise Found
Skoura
If you’ve started in Marrakech or Agadir, your Memory Road journey ends in the oasis settlement of Skoura, hard against the Atlas Mountains, where Morocco’s finest hotel, Dar Ahlam, awaits. Here you’ll find the perfect balance of adventure and pampering indulgence. Guests can embark on guided camel treks or horseback rides through the palm groves, explore Skoura’s crumbling kasbah, or take to the skies at dawn with a hot-air balloon flight over the surrounding landscape. There are also walking tours through the valley itself, discovering rose fields, local perfume distilleries and charming Berber villages. Back at Dar Ahlam, dive into a Moroccan cooking class, a traditional pottery workshop or a guided tea tasting. And if that’s all too much after your long road trip, simply unwind by the pool, indulge in a hammam or massage or enjoy a quiet evening under the desert stars.
Here’s Looking at You
Casablanca

Then explore Casablanca’s Art Deco district with a private historian, discovering hidden villas and architectural treasures away from the crowds. For lunch, enjoy a gourmet rooftop dining experience with panoramic views, before indulging in a little shopping and a spoiling spa treatment back at your hotel. Where you'll stay
Great journeys need great places to lay your head. These are our tried and tested suggestions.
Riad Tarabel
Riad Tarabel is the kind of smart Marrakech address a good friend might whisper into your ear, a place whose elegance is expressed through restraint rather than ostentatiousness. Hidden in the Medina’s labyrinth, its mood is unmistakably French-colonial-meets-Moroccan, but in the softest, most sophisticated way. Antique trunks, vintage photography and a palette of creams, greys, and barely-there blues make it feel more like a private residence than a hotel. Spa treatments take place in serene, candle-lit rooms where argan oil and rose water linger gently on the skin. By evening, dinners are arranged in lantern-lit courtyards.
Maison des Arganiers
Clinging to a hillside in the ancient Berber village of Azrarag, La Maison des Arganiers is a traditional white-washed shepherd’s douar, sensitively re-imagined and offering breathtaking views of the Argan Valley from its terraces. Exposed stone interiors, elaborately carved wooden doors and powder-blue and beige soft fabrics create a wonderfully inviting atmosphere. After a day immersing yourself in local Berber culture, return for a hammam scrub and a cold glass of rosé overlooking the argan tree groves, before tucking into a delicious candle-lit Moroccan dinner.
Maison de l’Oasis
Surrounded by burbling irrigation channels and pomegranate orchards in one of Morocco’s most beautiful palmeraies, La Maison de l’Oasis in Tighmert isn’t really a house in the traditional sense. Rather, it is two separate rammed-earth pavilions, each with one or two bedrooms, a spacious bathroom and an outdoor terrace. Black-and-white photos, ethnic stencil paintings and camel-hair awnings abound, evoking a timeless Africa. It’s a place for daydreaming by the pool, slow conversation-filled dinners and reclining on blankets among the palms to watch a classic movie. You won’t want to leave.
Acacia Camp
Located where southern Morocco’s desert plains meet the first curve of the Saharan dunes, Acacia Camp is a magical end-of-the-world retreat designed for travellers who appreciate the kind of stillness and solitude only the desert can offer. Offering a rare blend of refinement and wilderness, the camp feels more like a private sanctuary than a temporary shelter, with crisp linens, flickering lantern light and a silence so deep it seems to have texture. Meals are served en plein air, accompanied by a crackling fire and the shifting colours of the dunes as they fade into a night thick with constellations.
Maison Rouge
La Maison Rouge is a beautifully restored local house located within a rust-red desert canyon near the village of Awju with sweeping valley views. The comfortable rooms blend traditional Moroccan and modern design touches, from intricate wickerwork to black and white photographs and heavy chests made of rich leather and dark wood, giving the place an Old World, colonial air. As with all the Memory Road properties, the food is delicious and authentic, using regional ingredients like alfalfa bakoula, pomegranate vinegar and date caramel. It’s a fabulous place to relax, up on the rooftop with a glass of wine in hand watching sunset colours streak the sky or enjoying a palm-shaded breakfast by a trickling stream.
Maison Tizkmoudine
Maison Tizkmoudine, located within an abandoned village being renovated by the Global Heritage Fund, offers an extraordinary glimpse into the heart of Moroccan ancestral culture and the very essence of the immersive hospitality we love. There is no electricity, and rooms are softly lit by lanterns, with a wood-burning stove to keep things warm in winter. Furnishings are made by talented artisan craftswomen from the village. Days invite walks between villages, exploring mountain paths, visiting local homes and markets, learning traditional cooking, or simply sitting with the changing light. It is an intimate, grounded stay, and a rare and wonderful opportunity to forge meaningful connections with the local community.
Dar Ahlam
Morocco’s most storied and romantic retreat, Dar Ahlam is a palliative against pretty much anything. Tucked into the oasis of Skoura on the eastern side of the Atlas, this intimate, 19-room riad blends traditional kasbah architecture with understated luxury: think clay walls, carved cedar ceilings and soft rugs. Rooms, each uniquely appointed, offer panoramic views of swaying date palms, while courtyards, terraces and a gorgeous swimming pool invite languid afternoons beneath the Moroccan sun. Delicious cuisine from slow-cooked tagines to fragrant pastries are all served with effortless grace. If you are after privacy, solitude and a deep sense of place, Dar Ahlam does not disappoint.
Royal Mansour Casablanca
While completely different in style to its famous big sister in Marrakech, the Royal Mansour in Casablanca is no less lavish, no less a beacon of solid-gold service. With a slick and polished Art Deco vibe, it is unquestionably the smartest address in this most intriguing of cities. With all the amenities you could possibly hope for, including world-class dining and a fabulous spa, it’s a place to wallow in bygone opulence and congratulate yourself on your excellent taste.
