Deep in the heart of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in a remote region of southwest Uganda, mountain gorillas thrive in their natural habitat. Our gorilla trek with one of Africa’s leading primatologists offers an exclusive life-changing experience.
For a true understanding of Uganda’s gentle giants, who better to explain than Dr Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka, a global trailblazer of community conservation efforts? Her pioneering approach to tackling gorilla population threats focuses on improving the health and well-being of local people. This approach has revolutionised conservation practice internationally. Dr Kalema-Zikusoka has spent over two decades conserving mountain gorillas in Bwindi and since she became Uganda’s first-ever wildlife vet in 1996, mountain gorilla population numbers have increased to around 500 – enough to downgrade the mountain gorilla from critically endangered to endangered.

"Nothing can prepare you for the time you spend in the presence of these enormous animals, observing their behaviour in silent awe."
Setting off into the dense mist-enshrouded jungle of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, every day offers a different type of encounter. From the heart-pounding anticipation as you break trail to track a single family, to the striking moment you find yourself standing feet away from the gorillas as they go through their daily grooming rituals. Nothing can prepare you for the time you spend in the presence of these enormous animals, observing their behaviour in silent awe as a young male darts past whilst the alpha silverback looks on.
As you witness these extraordinary animals up close, you will gain insight into the daily activities of a primatologist. Enjoy the opportunity to learn from Dr Kalema-Zikusoka’s expertise and ask questions about how conservation efforts have helped to turn around the mountain gorilla’s plight. Observe the richness of the biodiversity on display from brightly coloured butterflies to an abundance of over 350 bird species, the L’Hoest monkey and the chimpanzee as you traverse through the humid forest across uneven terrain.
