Hawksbill turtle protection in Nicaragua’s Pearl Cays

Help ensure a brighter future for the endangered hawksbill turtle while staying at one of the Caribbean's most stunning private islands.

As you approach the stunning Nicaraguan retreat of Calala Island, you could be forgiven for thinking yourself a castaway about to be marooned in the middle of the Caribbean. But as you sail closer, thatch-roofed villas and a shimmering infinity pool emerge among the palm trees. By the time you’re greeted at the jetty, you’ll be a willing Robinson Crusoe, ready to begin life on this private island hideaway.

"The delicate ecosystem surrounding Calala is very fragile, and you can play a key role in ensuring its special wildlife is a gift passed to future generations."

The epitome of discreet barefoot luxury, Calala is mainly about relaxation interspersed with low-key water activities and superb gastronomy. However there is one experience we’d urge you to engage with, which is to join the team at the Calala Foundation as they help protect local nesting sites of the hawksbill turtle, a critically endangered species now threatened with extinction.

Working alongside the Wildlife Conservation Society, conservation efforts over time have had tremendous success and, in the latest nesting season, a record 75 nest sites were discovered on the island, with an approximate egg count of 9,000. The delicate ecosystem surrounding Calala is very fragile, and you can play a key role in ensuring its special wildlife is a gift passed to future generations.
