Days 1 - 2 : Buenos Aires
Arrive in Buenos Aires, an elegant Parisian-style city and the perfect place to begin your Argentina adventure. Stay two nights in a delightful small boutique home-from-home property away from the city bustle in Palermo Soho. Explore this vibrant city and see a spectacular tango performance at an intimate venue. Maybe even take a lesson yourself before venturing to a local milonga or tango club.
Day 3: Salta
Fly north to Salta to head right off the beaten path on a private 4x4 adventure to discover the magnificent landscapes and Andean scenery of the north-west that borders Chile and Bolivia. Walk among local communities, travel on roads built along an ancient Inca Trail and discover high-altitude wines from family-run vineyards. Arrive at your beautiful private mountain lodge near Tilcara.
Day 4: Tilcara
Today is an active day of exploration, hiking up from the pretty little adobe town of Tilcara with its charming local square and friendly residents. Follow ancient Inca pathways up into the hills and to little-known archaeological sites, experiencing a local lifestyle that has not changed for centuries. Return to your cozy lodge to relax and enjoy the tranquility of the Andes as you dine under the stars.
Day 5: Local Philanthropy - Salinas Grandes
Drive to Purmamarca today to see the stunning colours and landscape of the natural rock formations and then take a jaw-droppingly beautiful winding drive up to Salinas Grandes. Visit a project run and owned by the indigenous community who work on the salt flats and see how they use llamas and donkeys as transport for salt and food. Drive via spectacular Humahuaca Gorge to your overnight lodge.
Days 6 - 7 : Acay Mountain Pass and Cachi
Follow the famous Route 40 to cross the highest point at Acay Pass at 16,000 ft (nearly 5,000 metres). Explore little local towns before arriving at your private house in Cachi, amongst the lush vines of the Calchaqui Valley. The following day, stretch your legs with a gentle hike to the foot of Cachi Mountain. Learn about Calchaqui Valley weaving traditions in the evening.
Days 8 - 9 : Cafayate
Wind your way through local village, arriving at a historical family-owned hacienda and vineyard in Cafayate. Learn about the local gauchos as you explore the area on horseback. In the evening, enjoy dinner with a tasting and wine-pairing of this valley’s delectable high-altitude wines. On day 9, return to Salta via the stunning Quebrada de las Conchas for a flight to Iguazu Falls. Meet your private guide who will take you to your luxurious lodge, set amongst the beauty of the pristine forest.
Days 10 - 11 : Iguazu Falls
As dawn breaks, avid bird-watchers may take to the nearby forest with your guide looking for species such as toucans and manakins. Visit the pathways of the truly dramatic Iguazu Falls from Brazil and Argentina, kayak along the Parana River that borders with Paraguay or take time out to learn about the ancestral traditions of the Guarani communities over an evening drink and song.
Day 12 : Jesuit Missions and Wetlands
Your guide will drive you south today towards neighbouring Corrientes province to visit one of the last remaining Jesuit Mission sites that once dotted this area. Continue on via Posadas to a stunning lodge and working ranch on the edge of Esteros del Ibera, a vast wetlands of huge significance for some unique wildlife species. This lodge is instrumental in helping to protect this wildlife refuge for future generations.
Days 13 - 14 : Esteros del Ibera
Venture out on an early morning boat ride on the shallow marshes looking out for capybara, caiman, brocket deer and spectacular birds from kingfishers to Jabiru storks and southern screamers. Back on the ranch, take excursions on foot, horseback, bike or 4x4. Rheas roam the gardens around your room and giant anteaters and chinchilla can sometimes be seen at dusk after a sundowner, if you are lucky!
Day 15 : Buenos Aires
A short scenic flight or overland drive from your Ibera lodge brings you to Posadas for a short flight back to Buenos Aires. For your last night in Argentina, we will arrange a dining experience to remember – part dinner party, part cooking lesson, part wine-tasting. Buenos Aires is perhaps the most eye-catching of cities. Often dubbed the Paris of South America, it’s bursting with cosmopolitan charm, from its wide, tree-lined boulevards, to the local neighbourhoods that bustle with antique markets, galleries, and artisan boutiques and cafés. Tango is still danced on the street and in parks, its music providing a haunting, ever-present melodic soundtrack to the city.
If you can tear yourself away from this enchanting city on your luxury holiday to Argentina, you’ll get a chance to experience Argentina’s dramatic landscapes. The plains leading down to Tierra del Fuego are as remote as they are vast, dotted with rich vines, glittering blue lakes, spectacular glaciers and dramatic granite peaks, while the stunning Atlantic Coast teems with wildlife. Northwards takes you from arid red-hued desert and dusty, adobe towns surrounded by cacti and deep gorges to lush rainforest, home to caiman, capybara, tapir and toucans – and, of course, the stunning Iguazu Falls.
Knowing where to start when planning a trip to this vast, spectacular destination might seem a little daunting. At The Explorations Company, we know the country inside-out and can take you to remote lodges and ranches for some unforgettable wildlife experiences on our South America private holidays, and can arrange tastings at boutique wineries, and advise you on where to go for some spectacular trekking and the finest horse-riding with expert guides.
We’ll even arrange dance teachers or a polo tournament for you. This is a stunning land of contrasts, and we’d love to help you plan your perfect luxury holiday to Argentina so you can discover its charms for yourself.
