Just a few hours by high speed hydrofoil takes you from the centre of Buenos Aires to the heart of its pretty old colonial centre, Colonia del Sacramento, a perfect taste of Uruguay’s history.
The beautiful old colonial district of the city is a delight to wander about by yourself. Here you will feel immediately in Uruguay as you see most locals sipping their maté from their gourd cups through the day or eating some of the delicious fresh ice cream. Climb up to the lighthouse for stunning views of the city and river, and explore a few of the eight quirky little city museums in the old quarter. Do note that it can get very crowded at weekends, as it is so easy to reach by high-speed hydrofoil from Buenos Aires, but during the week you will spot few visitors along its narrow streets.
