Souks, spices and snake-charmers
Marrakech
Few cities are as seductive as Marrakesh with its spice-filled souks, narrow bustling streets and the nightly commotion of Djemaa El Fna. Too much hubbub can feel a little intense, though, especially when travelling with children, so allow us to bring you a Marrakesh that is as relaxing as it is thrilling. With a stunning private villa in the quiet palmeraie as your base, explore a Marrakesh that many don’t get to see. Split into two teams and race through the souk and medina on a food-tasting treasure hunt that is not just great fun, but will unlock a charitable donation to an inspiring educational project you’ll visit later. Travel out in a motorbike sidecar to Dar Sadaka, which brings to life the surreal imagination of French visual artist Jean-Francois Fourtou; and learn the secrets of Moroccan cuisine at the amazing Amal Women’s Association.
Into the Berber heartland
Ourika Valley
Before you climb into the snow-capped Atlas Mountains, take to the skies in a hot-air balloon and marvel at the views beneath you. Then, installed at the heavenly Kasbah Bab Ourika, you’ll have two days to explore the rich Berber culture and drink in the Ourika Valley’s sublime views. Visit a nearby village house and learn from your friendly hosts how to bake the delicious local bread, prepare your own tagine and even how to milk the goats. A real highlight, for those who wish, is the chance to visit Dar Ataliba, a wonderful project that, against the odds, is educating young girls and giving them the chance of a future that might otherwise have been impossible.
Explore a desert oasis
Skoura
Leaving Ourika, continue deeper into the Atlas Mountains on a spectacular journey that will take you to Skoura via the otherworldly fortified town of Ait Ben Haddou and the film sets of Ouarzazate, where many a Hollywood movie was shot. The oasis community of Skoura, located where the Atlas Mountains meet the desert, is one of our favourite places in Morocco. Its atmospherically crumbling kasbah, palms and rose gardens are a Thousand and One Nights fantasy playground made for exploring, and your private guide will show you its secret nooks on trips out by bicycle and on the back of a camel, with surprise picnics and the chance to spend a night under canvas in the desert all party of the allure.
Here’s looking at you
Casablanca
Flying to Casablanca on Morocco’s breezy Atlantic coast, enjoy a final night of untrammelled luxury in the Royal Mansour. Wander along the corniche of this relaxed beach city, marvel at the spellbinding designs and architecture of the King Hassan II Mosque, trace the city’s French colonial past in the Art Deco quarter, and enjoy a seafood lunch among the old world ambience of Rick’s Café, not forgetting to bring out all your favourite lines of Bogart and Bacall.
Where you'll stay on your Morocco family adventure
Great journeys need great places to lay your head. These are our tried and tested suggestions.
Villa Alkhozama
Hidden away in Marrakesh’s palmeraie, Villa Alkhozama is a study in understated luxury. More intimate than the medina’s riads yet no less indulgent, this two-bedroom retreat blends contemporary design with traditional Moroccan craftsmanship. Service is as discreet as it is attentive—your personal butler anticipates every need, whether arranging a rooftop sunset aperitif or a hammam ritual in the villa’s spa. Days here unfold at a leisurely pace: breakfast beneath the shade of olive trees, afternoons lounging by the pool and evenings dining on fragrant tagines prepared by the in-house chef.
Kasbah Bab Ourika
Blessed by magical views of the Atlas Mountains in the Ourika Valley 45 minutes from Marrakech, Kasbah Bab Ourika is one of our favourite retreats in Morocco. Handcrafted textiles, sun-drenched courtyards, and flickering lanterns set the mood, while fragrant gardens and an infinity pool overlooking olive groves invite you to linger. Spend languid days here hiking to remote Berber villages, picnicking beside waterfalls, or enjoying delicious farm-to-table dishes starring produce from the kasbah’s own organic gardens.
Dar Faracha
Set in a walled orchard on the edge of the Sahara with serene views of the surrounding oasis and Atlas Mountains beyond, Dar Faracha has a dreamlike location that invites relaxation as much as it encourages adventure. A restored three-bedroom Berber house with all the conveniences, made special by the wonderful welcome and solicitous care you’ll receive. Savour organic garden produce, relax on sunbeds, or head out to explore. Camel, horseback and bicycle rides, 4×4 adventures, picnics in secret locations and overnight desert bivouac trips all await.
Royal Mansour Casablanca
While completely different in style to its famous big sister in Marrakech, the Royal Mansour in Casablanca is no less lavish, no less a beacon of solid-gold service. With a slick and polished Art Deco vibe, it is unquestionably the smartest address in this most intriguing of cities. With all the amenities you could possibly hope for, including world-class dining and a fabulous spa, it’s a place to wallow in bygone opulence and congratulate yourself on your excellent taste.
