Your Nepal adventure itinerary
Nepal’s Great Melting Pot
KATHMANDU
Situated at the end of the famed ‘hippie trail’, Nepal’s capital Kathmandu has an energy that will ignite your senses. Vibrant and chaotic, its streets resound with blaring horns, temple bells and birdsong. Prayer flags ripple and incense drifts through the air. With a room at the city’s smartest hotel and an expert guide to show you around, begin exploring this medieval city transplanted into the twenty-first century. Discover the old city’s Newari architecture, Hindu temples and Buddhist stupas en route to Durbar Square, still remarkable despite the 2015 earthquake. Shop for beads and textiles, pause over chai with a local and visit the Monkey Temple with its free-roaming macaques before retreating to your hotel sanctuary for a spa treatment and a fabulous dinner.
Into the Gurkha Heartland
THE ANNAPURNAS
Fly to Pokhara to begin a magical five-day trek through the foothills of the Annapurnas. Each day brings a blend of cultural encounters and breathtaking scenery, from traditional Gurkha villages to sweeping Himalayan vistas, with comfortable overnight stays in charming mountain lodges. Begin with the short climb to Majgaon, where convivial hospitality and your first views of the snow-capped peaks set the tone. Continuing along stone paths and suspension bridges, arrive in Landruk, famous for its honey hunters who climb flimsy bamboo ladders to collect honeycomb from sheer cliff faces. From here, it’s a gentle trek up to Ghandruk, one of Nepal’s most beautiful and culturally rich villages. Explorations Company supports a wonderful school project nearby, and we’d be delighted to arrange a visit for you. The final stretch leads through rhododendron forests and open ridges to Dhampus, where a sunset over the Annapurnas offers a fitting finale to your Himalayan trek.
Post-trek pampering
POKHARA
Returning to the trailhead and then by road to Pokhara, The Pavilions Himalayas Farm is a wonderfully pampering place to recover from the rigours of your trek. Here, with views back to where you have just been trekking, enjoy restorative massages and spa treatments, find a quiet moment for some yoga or meditation, and savour farm-to-table ingredients that you can pick from the organic garden and help prepare in a cookery class should you wish.
Land of the Sherpas
PHAPLU
Flying to Kathmandu, the next leg of your adventure begins with a spectacular helicopter flight to Solukhumbu in eastern Nepal. This magnificent and remote region south of Everest is the Nepal of yesteryear, a realm of jaw-dropping Himalayan scenery, mountaineering lore, Sherpa traditions and few other travellers. Staying at The Happy House, once the home of Sir Edmund Hillary, look forward to activities curated around your personal interests, whether that’s sunrise yoga, wildlife observation or immersion in the Sherpa culture. Explore Tibetan monasteries and ancient yak trading routes, or jump on a mountain bike and follow trails to sensational Himalayan viewpoints for the picnic of a lifetime. In the evenings swap tales over dishes like yak noodle broth and fresh-picked seasonal local vegetables served on beaten copper plates.
A Himalayan Dawn
RATNANGE RIDGE
The Happy House operates a number of luxury ger camps around lower Solukhumbu, allowing you to explore this magical region even deeper. Their camp on the Ratnange Ridge is a half day’s walk away, through lush valleys and rhododendron forests, past mountain villages, monasteries and terraced fields, with incredible Himalayan vistas before you. Reaching camp, relax and enjoy a wonderful campfire meal before bedding down in your well-equipped ger tent. With clear skies, you’ll wake up to one of the greatest dawns you’ve ever witnessed, before striking camp and walking back to Phaplu for the night.
The High Life
MOUNT EVEREST
Assuming fair weather, your time in Nepal culminates on a literal and figurative high. Leaving Phaplu early by helicopter, you’ll embark on one of the planet’s great aerial adventures, climbing to more than 19,000 feet for an overflight of the Everest region. Take in the majesty of the world’s highest peak and its giant neighbours Lhotse, Cho Oyu and Makalu. Peer down upon the Khumbu Icefall and the domed tents of Everest Base Camp, before making a landing (usually at Kala Patthar) to stretch your legs and drink in the astonishing views. Continuing to the Everest View Hotel, enjoy a great breakfast before flying back to Kathmandu and a final night in the Nepalese capital.
Where you'll stay on your Nepal adventure holiday
Great journeys need great places to lay your head. These are our tried and tested suggestions.
The Dwarika’s Hotel
At Kathmandu’s Dwarika’s Hotel, Nepalese heritage is elevated to an art form. This meticulously restored palace blends fifteenth-century woodwork, hand-carved doorways and terracotta reliefs with understated luxury. Every detail—from the tranquil courtyards to the Himalayan-inspired cuisine—reflects a reverence for tradition and craftsmanship. Rooms are adorned with antiques and silks, exuding warmth and authenticity. Just minutes from Kathmandu’s bustle, the hotel nevertheless feels worlds away: a serene cultural sanctuary where history whispers through every beam and brick.
Majgaon Lodge
Perched on the Annapurna trekking route at 4,600 feet above the scenic Modi River Valley, Majgaon Lodge is an appealing blend of rustic charm, tea plantation vibes and Himalayan elegance. Stone cottages with slate roofs and hand-carved windows open to sweeping views of Annapurna’s snow-capped peaks. Interiors mix woodwork and Nepalese textiles, while terraced gardens bloom with rhododendrons. Days begin with fresh mountain air and local coffee, and end beside a fire under star-filled skies.
La Bee Lodge
Situated at 5,400 feet along the Annapurna trail, the stone-and-timber retreat of La Bee Lodge in Landruk offers a heavenly blend of comfort and mountain charm. Framed by terraced hillsides and jaw-dropping views of Machapuchare, it’s a lovely overnight stay for trekkers. Rooms are simple yet refined, with warm Nepalese touches and private verandas perfect for enjoying a sunrise mug of tea. After a day’s hike, unwind by the fire or sip a G & T beneath prayer flags fluttering in the breeze. It’s quiet luxury at altitude—unassuming, soulful and deeply connected to its Himalayan setting.
Ghandruk Lodge
Set on the trail to Annapurna Base Camp at 6.500 feet above the village of Ghandruk, the area’s most culturally rich and fascinating settlement, Ghandruk Lodge offers warm Nepalese hospitality, sweeping mountain views and atmospheric wooden interiors, creating a welcoming atmosphere of understated luxury. Mornings begin with local tea on the veranda, as first light hits Machapuchare’s sacred peak. Days are spent trekking through rhododendron forests or visiting Gurkha honey-hunting villages, while evenings bring fireside relaxation and swapping of stories.
Dhampus Lodge
Boasting panoramic views of the entire Annapurna range, Dhampus Lodge is perched at 5,700 feet above the Pokhara Valley. Run on solar energy, the lodge’s bright and spacious rooms are adorned with Nepalese carpets, blankets and artwork. After your day’s trekking, gather on the grassy terrace for drinks and foot massages as the sun sets over the mountains then head into the cosy dining room for a restorative dinner by a crackling fire. While many will be off and away come morning, stay a little longer and enjoy local nature walks or simply relax and watch the clouds slowly drift past.
The Pavilions Himalayas, The Farm
Tucked into the lush hills of Pokhara, The Pavilions Himalayas The Farm is a serene eco-luxury retreat where sustainability meets sophistication. Terraced fields, organic gardens and snow-capped peaks form a cinematic backdrop for just a handful of chic villas, each blending rustic charm with modern comfort. Solar power, farm-to-table cuisine and community-focused initiatives anchor its ethos. Wake to birdsong, trek through quiet mountain trails and unwind by the infinity pool—all while supporting a hotel that gives as much to its surroundings as it offers its guests.
The Happy House
Set in Nepal’s remote Solukhumbu region south of Mount Everest, The Happy House exudes warmth, comfort and joy. Once the home of Sir Edmund Hillary, it’s a place of stories, where writers, painters, walkers, trekkers and mountain lovers come for peace, solitude and hospitality. Inside, hand-carved woodwork, crackling fires and exquisite Buddhist thangka paintings create an inviting atmosphere. Days begin with steaming chai and end with tales from the trail under a star-studded sky. It’s less a hotel, more a soulful retreat for trekkers drawn to the Nepal of bygone days.
Ratanage Ger Camp
Operated as a satellite of The Happy House, the comfortably appointed ger camp on Ratnange Ridge allows you to experience the very spirit of Nepal. Reached on foot after a beautiful half-day hike, the camp revolves around a central yurt which serves as a mess, common room and massage room, as well as (on windy nights) a communal sleeping space. Yurts are set up along the hillside surrounding the central yurt, and come with a small light, a giant mattress, a heated sleeping bag stuffed with a Hermes cashmere blanket, and a large soft pillow. There is also a bathroom tent with a long-drop.
