Mara Elephant Project

Elephants are in crisis

Elephants are in crisis. MEP aspires to expand its area of operation, deepen its partnerships and increase its level of community engagement. Please join us, and help support the Mara Elephant Project.

Mara Elephant Project’s mission is to protect elephants to conserve the greater Mara ecosystem. They accomplish this mission by utilizing anti-poaching patrols and rapid response ranger units, collaring, monitoring and collecting data on elephants, and using innovative techniques and technologies to mitigate human-elephant conflict.

The Crisis

A mixture of land-use changes resulting from human population growth, deforestation and poaching for elephants’ highly valuable ivory is causing populations to dwindle. Humans are encroaching upon historic elephant rangelands, and human-elephant conflict is on the rise. That, paired with the demand for ivory, means the illegal killing of elephants is at its highest level since the international ivory trade ban.

In 2011, some areas of Africa reported the highest level of poaching rates ever recorded. Researchers estimate that 38,000 elephants are killed every year to supply the illegal ivory trade. That is, one elephant killed every 15 minutes. Unfortunately, the market offers significant reward to poachers; ivory can sell for as much as $1,100 a kilogram in China (Save The Elephants 2015 China Report). Poachers make $200 per kilogram of ivory meaning that even a small pair of tusks can net a poacher more money than he would otherwise make in an entire year. If this trend continues, elephants could become extinct within 15 years.

MEP offers a VIP conservation tourism experience

Mara Elephant Project offers VIP visits to their headquarters located near Lemek Conservancy in the Maasai Mara, Kenya.

We can arrange this VIP conservation tourism experience at MEP HQ for a suggested donation. You and your family can venture to MEP HQ near Lemek Conservancy and learn about the important work they’re doing to protect elephants to conserve the greater Mara ecosystem.

You’ll meet MEP rangers, see an elephant collar, collected snares and other artifacts from the field. You’ll also learn about their collar tracking system and get a tour of MEP HQ to see the helicopter (if it’s at HQ). You’ll also be guided to visit a MEP collared elephant on your way back to camp and learn all about elephant protection and the complicated issues with poaching and human-elephant conflict in the Mara.

This experience will be a firsthand glimpse into the day-to-day lives of the people working on the front lines to save these essential mammals from extinction. This experience is especially important for families who want to create a lasting impact for their children. Nothing demonstrates the vital role each plant and animal of the Mara plays in the health of its ecosystem than seeing firsthand how interconnected we all are. Children are welcome at the MEP HQ and they will be sure to create a family-friendly experience your child will remember for years to come.

MEP is committed to the conservation of the Mara and understands that educating visitors to this precious ecosystem, so that they will be conservation advocates after they’ve left, is an essential part of their experience while visiting them.
