Project Luangwa Zambia

Tourism supporting education

Ensuring the people of the Luangwa Valley gain the full benefit of tourism by investing in education. Project Luangwa is a charitable organisation formed by the Safari Operators of South Luangwa as a part of their commitment to responsible tourism.

Their aim is to create an effective, coordinated approach to helping local communities improve their long term economic prospects whilst avoiding a negative impact on the environment and wildlife.

They believe as a charity operating in Zambia that by developing and improving education in schools and creating training opportunities they can help families have the chance of a lasting and sustainable income.

The Explorations Company, where no two journeys have ever been the same

Project Luangwa has a very holistic approach to the issues facing the communities in the Mfuwe area and, as such, have many different projects and welcome visitors to view the excellent work that has been achieved.

Their office adjoins their Craft Workshop right in the centre of Mfuwe. It is here that they have women (who describe themselves as 'less fortunate') learning craft skills which are sold in the shop. What started as a simple project - designing and making washable menstrual pads to keep girls in school - has developed into so much more.

They also have their Girls' and Boys' clubs promoting gender support and the local ones are run by an amazing young Zambian called Fwilane Banda. The way they work (including boys in gender support and menstrual health) is starting to be internationally recognised.

They were asked to speak at COP24 in Poland and following on from this Fwilane has also been to New York where she was invited to speak at the UN CSW63 conference.

But these are just two projects  - they also support several schools in the area, arrange sponsorship for around 170 secondary school pupils and tertiary students, have an on-going maths programme for 1200 primary school pupils and so much more. There is plenty for visitors to see and even get involved if they wish.

They also have an agreement with Proflight that enables visitors to bring a bag of donated items for Project Luangwa from Lusaka free of charge. If you are interested in this we can send you a PDF of their rules and regulations so you can see how it works as well as a list of items suitable for people to bring.

Please help us to support Project Luangwa by making a donation today.
