Your Southeast Asia private family holiday itinerary

fruit trade at market in bangkok

      Bright lights, big city

      Bangkok

Hit the ground running as you explore the Thai capital with your private guide. Your day begins with a visit to a bustling Bangkok street market, where you’ll explore vibrant stalls, sample local snacks, and observe residents doing their morning shopping. Then walk down Buddha Street towards the Golden Mountain, passing Wat Suthat with its Giant Swing, to reach Wat Saket, one of Bangkok’s oldest temples with a golden stupa housing Buddha relics.

After lunch, cruise the Chao Phraya River on a long-tailed boat, exploring the narrow klongs of Thonburi, known for its traditional teak houses. You’ll visit Baan Silapin (The Artist House) and off-the-beaten-path Wat Kamphaeng Bangchak, famous for its murals, before arriving at Wat Arun (the Dawn Temple) for a blessing and wrist-tying ceremony. In the evening head out by tuk-tuk on a street food tour, tasting various Thai dishes and learning about their cultural significance.

      Peace offering

      Luang Prabang

Luang Prabang is an absolute joy. With the gorgeous Amantaka as your base, and a top private guide, you’ll experience countless moments of grace and wonder. Join the dawn procession of hundreds of saffron-robed monks as they silently walk the streets to collect alms in an ancient Buddhist ritual. Stroll its bustling markets in search of fine handicrafts or exotic ingredients to cook up later with a private chef.

Explore the peaceful countryside, stopping off to milk buffalos, meet rice farmers, bathe beneath jungle waterfalls or visit a black bear rescue centre. Cruise along the Mekong to the sacred Pak Ou Caves and its centuries-old Buddha images, arriving after the crowds for a more peaceful experience. Wander Luang Prabang’s old town, pausing to take in sweeping river views and visit ancient temples. And enjoy fabulous meals, whether a picnic beside a pool in the rainforest or in the home of a traditional villager.

      Temple town

      Siem Reap

Arriving in Cambodia, your first stop is Siem Reap and the exquisite Buddhist temple complex of Angkor Wat. We know how to beat the crowds, and our recommendation is to wake early for a pre-dawn walk by torchlight to Angkor Wat itself, where, as first light hits the temple, you can sit and contemplate its magnificence.

We’d also recommend visiting the remoter temple complexes of Banteay Srei and Banteay Samre. However beautiful, though, too many temples won’t necessarily go down well with the kids, so let us introduce you to the many other fun and insightful experiences Siem Reap has to offer. In between relaxing by the pool at your beautiful hotel Phum Baitang, enjoy front-row tickets to the amazing Phare Circus, immerse yourselves in Cambodian cuisine on a fun dine-around tour by tuk-tuk, with appetiser, main course and dessert all served at different restaurants, and visit local NGO Apopo for a remarkable demonstration of how rats are used to locate landmines – a legacy of the Khmer Rouge.

      Welcome to the jungle

      Cardamom Hills

Deep in the rugged Cardamom Hills of southwest Cambodia is possibly the world’s chicest jungle camp – yours for the next three days as you experience the radical fusion of world-class design, hospitality and conservation that is Shinta Mani Wild. Spend your time exploring the waterways of South East Asia’s last wild estuarine ecosystem on pontoon boats, foraging for jungle ingredients, and accompanying rangers and researchers on motorbikes as they check the land for illegal activity. If you’d prefer to take things a little easier, the spa offers a full range of treatments in the tranquility of lush rainforest surroundings.

      Song of the sea

      Koh Rong

Song Saa makes an idyllic final stop on your journey through Southeast Asia. Set on a jungle-clad private island surrounded by shimmering coral reefs in the Gulf of Thailand, it’s  just the place to live out your Robinson Crusoe fantasies. There are water sports galore, including scuba diving, kayaking, snorkelling, and speedboat excursions.

Glide across shimmering waters on a sunset cruise, or explore rainforest trails teeming with native flora and wildlife. Ecological and cultural programmes provide insights into the island’s unique environment and nearby communities, and a private beach ensures absolute seclusion. As night falls, and the waves begin to shimmer with bioluminescent plankton, you’ll wonder how you’ll ever be able to leave this all behind.

Where you'll stay on your Southeast Asia family adventure

Great journeys need great places to lay your head. These are our tried and tested suggestions.

      conservatory at the siam bangkok

      The Siam

Set on the Chao Phraya River, The Siam isn’t just a hotel—it’s an immersive journey into Bangkok’s golden age of glamour. Its 39 palatial suites come with vintage steamer trunks, clawfoot bathtubs and beds draped in crisp linens. For those seeking greater exclusivity, there are teakwood residences with private pools and garden courtyards. Beyond its sheer beauty, The Siam delivers a deeply personal experience, with a dedicated butler ensuring your every whim is met. The temple-like Opium Spa offers therapies that instantly remove you from Bangkok’s frenzied energy. Dining is equally special—whether it’s a leisurely breakfast at the riverside pier or a candlelit dinner at Chon Thai, where generations-old family recipes take centre stage.

      amantaka pool in luang prabang

      Amantaka

Set within a cluster of graceful French colonial buildings and palm-shaded courtyards, Amantaka distills the essence of Luang Prabang—serene, storied and steeped in quiet luxury. The suites, many with private pools, whisper Indochine elegance, their high ceilings and four-poster beds framed by handcrafted teak and billowing linen. Mornings begin with a private almsgiving ceremony at dawn as saffron-robed monks process silently through the misty streets. Evenings bring candlelit dinners on the verandah, where fragrant Lao curries and Mekong River fish are served beneath a canopy of stars.

      Phum Baitang

A stay at Phum Baitang feels a world away from the crowds flocking to Angkor Wat. Rising gracefully from the surrounding rice fields, its 45 thatched-roof villas, some with private plunge pools, are studies in understated luxury. Days unfold unhurriedly—sipping freshly pressed sugarcane juice in the farmhouse-turned-bar or floating in the infinity pool as golden hour settles over the paddies. Two excellent restaurants serve up vibrant Cambodian dishes from fragrant fish amok to market-fresh curries. As fireflies flicker across the fields and a soft breeze carries the scent of lemongrass, Phum Baitang captures something rare: an escape that feels both rooted and deeply transporting.

guest tent overlooking the cardamom river at shinta mani wild

      Shinta Mani Wild

Located deep in the untamed jungles Cambodia’s Cardamom Hills, Shinta Mani Wild redefines the concept of wilderness luxury. This Bill Bensley-designed tented camp is not just a place to stay—it’s an adventure in itself, which starts with your arrival by zip line over the forest. Tents are inspired by the golden age of exploration, with vintage leather, hardwood floors and open-air brass soaking tubs overlooking the river. Dining is a foraged affair, with jungle-to-table dishes such as river prawns grilled over open flames or wild greens folded into fragrant broths. There’s a rainforest spa offering Khmer-inspired therapies, and you can join the onsite conservation team on anti-poaching patrol to help protect this wild frontier.

aerial view of the islands and private overwater bungalows for song saa private island

      Song Saa

A private island retreat adrift in Cambodia’s Koh Rong archipelago, Song Saa effortlessly intertwines sustainability and barefoot luxury. Its stunning overwater and jungle villas are crafted from reclaimed timber and local stone, and each is blessed with a private infinity pool and uninterrupted ocean views. When you’re not snorkelling through coral gardens, kayaking through mangroves or being pampered at the spa, tuck into Kampot pepper crab and coconut-laced curries. At night, bioluminescent plankton shimmers beneath the surf, a natural wonder that turns every swim into something quite magical.
