Ancient reservoirs still feed the rice fields, sacred rituals shape daily life and spice and tea plantations recall the trade that drew the world to Sri Lanka’s shores. Travelling from the great northern kingdoms through Kandy and the tea country to Galle and Colombo, you’ll discover how this remarkable island became the country it is today. Conservationists, cultural storytellers and creative personalities bring their own perspectives to the journey, with beautiful manor houses and tea bungalows offering an equally personal sense of place.
These months generally offer a good balance for a journey combining the Cultural Triangle, central highlands and southern coast. Expect warm days in the lowlands and cooler temperatures in the tea country, where mist and showers are part of the landscape.

Your signature Sri Lanka holiday itinerary
An island welcome
Day1: Kotugoda
Your journey begins among the tropical gardens of The Wallawwa, a characterful country house within easy reach of the international airport. Settle into your room, take a dip in the garden pool or let a massage ease away the flight. With the evening left free, there is time for a first taste of Sri Lankan cooking before your exploration begins the following morning.
Water and worship
Days 2-5: Cultural Triangle
After morning yoga and breakfast, travel north into Sri Lanka’s ancient heartland, where great white dagobas rise above the trees and broad reservoirs hold the sky in their still waters. Begin your stay at Uga Ulagalla with a Kamatha dinner, a traditional, open-air Sri Lankan dining experience set amidst working paddy fields. It perfectly introduces the ingredients and cooking traditions of the surrounding countryside.
On day three, explore Anuradhapura, the island’s first great capital, visiting its important Buddhist monuments alongside less frequented sites. Your guide will help you understand the ingenious relationship between village, temple and reservoir. Looking across the rice fields today, you’ll see how closely the ancient landscape remains connected to everyday life.
The following morning leads into the forest at Ritigala, where stone pathways and monastic ruins reveal a more secluded expression of Buddhist life. Later, join an alms offering at a rural temple, gaining insight into a tradition that continues to connect monks with their surrounding communities. A conversation with conservationist and elephant researcher Sumith Pilapitiya brings the natural world into sharper focus, exploring the challenges of sharing this landscape and the knowledge that years of observation can offer.
Day five takes you to Polonnaruwa, the second great ancient capital, whose ruins open another chapter in the island’s history. Lunch with farmers near the paddy fields brings that history to the table. Continue to a local rice mill with an insider to follow the crop beyond the fields, discovering the work behind a staple that has sustained Sri Lanka for generations.
The kingdom lives on
Days 6-7: Kandy
Travelling towards Kandy on day six, stop at Alu Viharaya, a Buddhist temple associated with the preservation of the island’s religious teachings. The landscape climbs into the hills as you approach Sri Lanka’s last independent kingdom, where royal history and Buddhist devotion remain closely entwined.
Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in the company of a knowledgeable temple insider, whose explanations reveal the significance of this sacred institution and its place in the story of the Kandyan monarchy. The evening introduces another aspect of the kingdom’s artistic heritage, with a cultural experience arranged around dinner or sundowners.
On day seven, you’ll be welcomed into the home of a traditional Kandyan dancing family. Hearing how movement, music and knowledge pass from one generation to the next offers an intimate understanding of an art form often encountered only on stage. Later, follow a food trail through Kandy’s back streets, tasting your way through the city as your guide introduces its different communities and histories. A visit to St Paul’s Church, close to the Temple of the Tooth, adds another perspective on the influences that have shaped this enduring cultural capital.
Beyond the tea gardens
Days 8-10: Hatton and the Tea Country
Continue into the central highlands on day eight, passing slopes patterned with tea bushes on the way to Hatton. A visit to a Hindu kovil in Norwood introduces the beliefs and traditions of the plantation communities, whose lives are closely connected with the tea industry. At Ceylon Tea Trails, high tea in the gardens of a beautifully preserved planter’s bungalow makes a fitting introduction to your three nights in the hills.
The following day, lace up your walking shoes to trek sections of the Pekoe Trail, following paths through mountain scenery and working tea estates. Along the way, your guide will share the history of the communities who live here, including the origins of the plantation houses and the role of Hindu traditions in daily life. Walking through the tea gardens gives you time to appreciate both the landscape and the human story behind it.
On day 10, visit Dunkeld Tea Factory to follow the leaf through production and discover how Ceylon tea became known around the world. The process opens a wider conversation about an industry that transformed the island’s economy and society. Return to your bungalow for an afternoon at leisure, with the pleasures of the house and gardens close at hand.
Stories within the walls
Days 11-12: Galle
Transfer to Galle, where the island’s story turns towards the Indian Ocean, where centuries of trade brought different communities, cultures and colonial powers to its shores.
Explore with Atheeq Ifthikar, a cultural storyteller whose family roots in Galle stretch back five generations. Through his eyes, the streets reveal the people who have traded, cooked and worshipped here, and the ways their lives continue to shape the UNESCO-listed fort. A visit with a long-established resident brings family memories into the conversation, offering a personal connection with the buildings around you. Afterwards, enjoy a guided arrack tasting at Ropewalk, Galle Fort Hotel’s specialist bar, discovering another distinctive Sri Lankan tradition.
The next morning takes you into the countryside to Top House Weligama, Rupert Beeley’s working cinnamon estate. Learn how true cinnamon is grown and harvested, and appreciate the care involved in turning bark into the delicate quills familiar in kitchens around the world. Rupert’s own journey from London to rural Sri Lanka adds a personal dimension to the story of a spice that once drew merchants across oceans. Return to Galle for an afternoon at leisure, with time to explore the fort independently or enjoy your hotel.
An island looking forward
Days 13-14: Colombo
Travel towards Colombo on day 13, stopping at Lunuganga, Geoffrey Bawa’s remarkable country estate. Moving through its gardens and carefully framed views, discover how Sri Lanka’s celebrated architect explored the relationship between buildings, landscape and tropical life. It is a compelling introduction to the island’s modern design identity. At the capital, check in for two nights at either Ishq Colombo or Paradise Road Tintagel Colombo. The evening brings dinner and hosted drinks with a local personality, opening a conversation about the country today and its future.
Your final full day begins with an artist encounter, followed by lunch at Barefoot Cafe and time to browse its textiles, crafts, books and artwork. In the afternoon, researcher and photographer Mark Forbes introduces the Colombo he knows through its landmarks, overlooked buildings and stories of everyday life. Trading history, colonial architecture and the modern city come together as you explore.
Dinner at the Gallery Cafe, in a space closely associated with Bawa, provides a fitting finale. Subject to availability, we could also arrange drinks and conversation with Paradise Road founder Shanth Fernando, whose work has helped shape Sri Lanka’s contemporary design landscape. After exploring the influences that made the island, it is an opportunity to hear from someone contributing to its next chapter.
The story continues

Where you'll stay
Great journeys need great places to lay your head. These are our tried and tested suggestions.
The Wallawwa
Set within mature tropical gardens near the international airport, The Wallawwa brings the warmth of a country house to the beginning of your journey. Spacious rooms, shaded outdoor spaces and a pool fringed by greenery make it easy to settle in after a long flight. The open-sided restaurant introduces Sri Lankan flavours, while the spa offers a welcome opportunity to unwind before travelling north.
Uga Ulagalla
A historic manor house anchors this rural retreat near Anuradhapura, with spacious villas and private pools set across a green estate. The sense of connection with the surrounding countryside is part of its appeal, particularly over a Kamatha dinner inspired by local food traditions. Between explorations of ancient capitals and forest monasteries, your villa offers privacy and the simple pleasure of a swim beneath the tropical sky.
Adigar's Manor
An ancestral manor outside Kandy, this intimate heritage hotel carries the character of the region into your stay. Period architecture and tropical gardens create an inviting setting, with the atmosphere of a private house and space to enjoy time between excursions. After the city’s sacred sites, family encounters and food trails, it offers a comfortable base that feels rooted in the history you have come to explore.
Ceylon Tea Trails
Beautifully restored planters’ bungalows set the scene for life in Sri Lanka’s tea country. Gardens open towards the hills, afternoon tea becomes a daily pleasure and the atmosphere retains the intimacy of a country house. Your stay places you close to working plantations, with walking trails and the Dunkeld factory offering a connection to the world beyond the bungalow. Three nights allow time to enjoy the house as well as the landscape.
Galle Fort Hotel
A restored Dutch mansion in the heart of Galle Fort, this characterful boutique hotel offers an atmospheric base for discovering the maritime city. Heritage architecture and individually styled suites reflect the building’s long history, while a courtyard pool provides a welcome retreat from the tropical heat. Ropewalk, its specialist arrack bar, adds a distinctly Sri Lankan flavour to evenings within the fort.
Ishq Colombo or Paradise Road Tintagel Colombo
Your final two nights are spent at one of two intimate Colombo addresses proposed for this journey. Ishq Colombo offers the character of a private city residence, while Paradise Road Tintagel Colombo extends the journey’s interest in Sri Lankan design through its connection with Shanth Fernando’s Paradise Road. We will select the property that best suits your preferences as the journey takes shape.
Customise your journey
All our journeys are fully bespoke and can be customised to meet your needs, interests and preferences. Here are a few ideas to inspire you.
Allow an additional night in the ancient heartland for more time among the archaeological sites and deeper conversations about rural life and conservation.
Extend your stay in the Tea Country, balancing longer walks with time to enjoy the bungalow and gardens.
Spend longer in Galle to explore the fort independently and give more time to its food, trading heritage and cinnamon country.
Spend a few days exploring Wilpattu or Yala National Park on safari, with the chance to encounter leopards, Asian elephants, sloth bears and a wonderful variety of birds.
Include a stay at a luxury coastal resort, with time to enjoy the beach and sea. For those interested in marine life, aerial or catamaran excursions could be arranged in search of whales and dolphins, according to the season and conditions. A carefully operated sailing catamaran offers the possibility of a quieter encounter with less reliance on engine power, with opportunities to swim and snorkel at suitable spots along the way.
Include a stay on a coconut and spice plantation to experience life on a working estate, discovering the crops, cultivation and daily activity that give the surrounding landscape its character.
Explore Sri Lanka’s Ayurvedic heritage with a stay at a luxury wellness retreat, whether you are seeking a bespoke programme of therapies or simply wish to enjoy the spa and tranquil surroundings. Two of our favourites are Santani near Kandy and Haritha Villas and Spa in Hikkaduwa, near Galle.
