Highlights of your luxury holiday through Central America
Passage through Panama
Panama City - Panama
Begin your journey in the melting pot of Panama City, a crossroads of trade ever since the sixteenth century. Skyscrapers glitter along the Pacific, yet just minutes away the cobblestone streets of Casco Viejo reveal a different rhythm—colonial charm, curated boutiques and restored mansions. With the sophisticated Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo as your base, you’ll have a top private guide to reveal to you the very best of this fascinating city. Enjoy behind the scenes access to the Panama Canal’s Miraflores Lock, a sunset stroll with through Panama’s atmospheric old quarter and a wonderful gastronomic odyssey through the flavours of Panama, savouring everything from seafood and rum to rare indigenous fruits and the world renowned (and incredibly expensive) Geisha coffee.
Where the jungle meets the ocean
Golfo Dulce - Costa Rica
Flying to David in western Panama, you’ll be met for the short drive across the border to Golfito in Costa Rica. Here a boat will be waiting to whisk you across the water to the fabulous Playa Cativo Lodge. Hidden away where Central America’s richest rainforest ecosystem meets the remarkable marine biodiversity of Golfo Dulce, it’s a fabulous place to explore Costa Rica’s wildlife. Inland there are spider monkeys, tapir (and the odd big cat) along with countless colourful butterflies and birds, while the seas burst with sea turtles, humpback whales and up to 3,000-strong-pods of spinner dolphin. At night, go looking for tree frogs, or watch in wonder as the waves sparkle green and blue from bioluminescent plankton.
Under the volcano
Arenal - Costa Rica
Continuing north, enjoy front-row seats on Arenal volcano at sumptuous Nayara Tented Camp. With your private naturalist guide, look for rainforest monkeys and colourful birds as you follow a series of suspended bridges through the forest canopy. Then head out after dark with flashlights to search for the jungle’s nocturnal residents including red-eyed frogs, kinkajous, coatis, screech owls, a variety of outlandish insects and, if you’re lucky, maybe even a margay or an ocelot. You’ll also have a chance to explore the electric blue Rio Celeste, surely one of the world’s most surreally beautiful rivers, and bathe in an idyllic jungle waterfall.
Cobblestones and coffee
Antigua - Guatemala
Your time in Guatemala kicks off in the beautiful UNESCO-listed city of Antigua, whose cobbled streets are framed by grand churches, bell towers, and historic convents. The city pulses with colour everywhere—from the vivid clothing of locals to scarlet-hued tortillas and lively markets brimming with handmade textiles and crafts. With the elegant Villa Bokeh as your base, spend a few days soaking up colonial Antigua’s charms: cycle through town, sample local dishes and visit a coffee plantation,or simply sit in the town square and gaze up at the lazy puffs of smoke emitted from time to time by Agua Volcano.
The world’s most beautiful lake
Lake Atitlan - Guatemala
Departing Antigua, travel through the lush Guatemalan highlands, winding past vivid chicken buses and bustling Chichicastenango market (open Thursdays and Sundays) en route to the breathtaking volcano-ringed shores of Lake Atitlán, where the deliciously serene art-filled retreat of Casa Palopo is your home for the next few days. Many of Guatemala’s indigenous communities can be found by the lake, each known for a particular skill, be it pottery, weaving or naive art—the best of which today commands sky-high prices in New York. Aboard a private boat with a local guide, you’ll hop between villages, discovering the rich variety of local cultures. For lovers of textiles and artisan goods, the lakeside villages offer an abundance of treasures—from hammocks and handwoven baskets to bedspreads, vibrant purses, and intricate tablecloths.
Maya magic
Yucatan Peninsula - Mexico
No visit to Central America would be complete without delving into the world of the Maya. Flying to Merida, you’ll enjoy spectacular accommodation at Chable Yucatan, a meticulously restored 19th-century hacienda hidden within the lush jungles of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula. With an incredible spa built around a sacred cenote, offering treatments that incorporate traditional Mayan rituals, and culinary experiences curated by acclaimed chef Jorge Vallejo, Chablé Yucatán is a sanctuary in its own right. But the world beyond its gates is just as enticing. Your private guide will take you into nearby Merida to enjoy its gastronomic riches from cochinita pibil to the most tongue-tingling tacos. And of course to the great Maya cities of Uxmal and less-crowded Kabah, where you’ll come face to face with one of the ancient world’s most evolved and enigmatic civilisations.
