Flying by helicopter to Lake Turkana and even the Great Rift Valley where different tribes can be observed. This is completely off-the-beaten-track and an area of extreme beauty. Stay at beautiful, small, owner-managed lodges. This is a magical, mysterious and timeless part of Kenya where the tribes live an ancient lifestyle.
There is a lovely camp here as well as a beautiful homestead to stay at not far away. Lobolo is a gem of a tented camp with just four luxury, en-suite tents overlooking the vast Lake Turkana (Jade Sea). The owners have spent the last ten years working with the local Turkana community to create this most unusual camp and project.
Another favourite is Desert Rose, an unique, eco friendly lodge located at 5,500 feet on the verdant cedar forest slopes of Mt Nyiru which towers majestically above the Elbarta plains, between Karisia Mountains and Lake Turkana in North Kenya. Fly through the Suguta, Africa's hottest and most inaccessible valley - available only from the air. Visit the Chalbi Desert, considered to be the harshest place in Kenya - endless cracked earth combined with the white soda, changing to a lake during the wet season.
There is also a Jade Sea Expedition which is a 5-day waterborne expedition to Lake Turkana, fly-camping and exploring the crater lakes and volcanoes, as well as visiting the paleontological site of Koobi Fora, one of the Cradles of Mankind, and the Lower Omo River in Ethiopia.
We also provide a helicopter or light aircraft for people who simply want to fly here for the day, or perhaps want to fly from the Mara for an overnight or two. Our helicopter safaris to Lake Turkana are particularly popular, as one has amazing visibility as well as being able to land almost anywhere! This is the sort of safari for somebody wanting to get under the skin of Africa, realising that it is the quickest way to get to the deepest, most interesting parts of Africa.
We also have a wonderful 3 night/4 day helicopter safari that takes in a night in Laikipia, a night in Lake Turkana and a night in the Matthews range mountains - all areas of extreme beauty. You can then be dropped off in the Masai Mara for your safari. We also offer helicopter transfers to the Great Rift Valley Lakes for excellent fly fishing and there is also a rustic lodge where one can stay.
For a safari with a difference, we cannot recommend a visit to Lake Turkana more, especially for our clients who would like to see a totally unspoilt, dramatic and different area and who are interested in the cultural element too.
"A gleaming surface of the lake stretching far beyond the reach of the eyesight, the deep blue, beautifully framed, suspended between the sky and the earth", said Ludwig von Hohnel who discovered the lake in 1888.
