Responsible tourism in Asia through Philanthropy Plus
The Explorations Company has set up its charitable foundation, called Philanthropy Plus, whereby our clients, for a donation, can then visit these regions and see the direct impact their contribution has made. For us, this really is the most rewarding of all travel experiences.
This is for committed philanthropists that want to witness their investments at work in real-life situations. Donor travel is deeply moving, can upset idealism but ultimately brings people closer to the issues and communities that they care about. It also deepens sustainable investment and strengthens the connection between travellers and community organizations.
Why have The Explorations Company set it up? Nicola Shepherd, founder of TEC started her company 30 years ago with the overwhelming desire to put back funds into initially Africa and then to other third world continents in which the company operates. Although born in India, she was raised in Africa and these two continents have long held a great passion and interest for her and by being a conduit, she can direct meaningful assistance to the preservation of wildlife on these continents for future generations to enjoy.

How is SEWA empowering self-employed women of Gujurat and beyond?
In our constant endeavour to engage with and support effective and innovative charitable organisations across our destinations, in India the Explorations Company is supporting SEWA, a trade union that supports and empowers self-employed women from underprivileged sections.
We live in a society that is full of paradoxes. This harsh reality is more evident in India than many other countries and it is one of the prime concerns shared by most travellers.

How can responsible tourism help to save the tiger?
Since the dawn of human civilisation, tigers have held a mystical place in our imaginations. Revered and feared by ancient cultures across Asia, tigers have been featured in many folklores and myths and have come to represent royalty, courage, wisdom, prowess in battle and protection from evil.
Despite their mythical status, their very existence is now under threat and it is now more important than ever to support and encourage the efforts to save their fast declining natural habitat.

Making a Difference: Funding tiffin lunches for a rural school in Nepal
The Explorations Company is funding a lunchtime tiffin programme for 60+ pupils at the Shree Kumrung Baraha School in Nepal.
Shree Kumrung Baraha is located in a stunning but remote spot on the terraces of Tikhyan, under the dramatically looming slopes of Annapurna South. The school’s headmaster, Ram Poudel, oversees the education of around 60 primary age pupils.
I came across the school whilst looking for off-the-beaten track walking for individual trekking holidays in Nepal’s Annapurna Mountains.

How will your visit to the wilds of Borneo help save the ‘Critically Endangered’ Orangutans?
Both orangutan species are now on the path toward extinction. The Bornean orangutan is now critically endangered, with populations in sharp decline due to habitat destruction and illegal hunting.
Bornean orangutans now join their cousins, Sumatran orangutans, which have been listed as critically endangered since 2008. Populations for that species are currently estimated at about 14,000.

How can 'Sustainable Travel' help to increase Tiger numbers in India's Reserves?
How can we ensure that wildlife and the people who live alongside it can become the primary beneficiaries of tourism and can wildlife tourism enhance the quality and quantity of the habitat available?
Wildlife tourism is arguably the fastest growing sector in the travel industry, the largest service industry in the world, which, like any other industry, is governed by bottom lines, growth and quick returns. Governments, particularly in developing economies, are cashing in on a trend.

How is 'Sustainable Travel' helping children in India's Samthar Valley?
In the Samthar Valley of West Bengal, sustainable travel is directly benefitting local communities through investments in infrastructure, environmental projects and educating local children at the inspired Awake and Shine School.
In many developing nations, a substantial part of tourism revolves around the country’s natural beauty and architectural heritage and as the volume of visitors multiplies, sustainability is a rising concern.
