Experience life on top of the world at Shakti 360° Leti – a high-end Himalayan lodge

A little piece of heaven on earth…that’s the only way one could describe Shakti 360 Leti. Perched deep within the Indian Himalaya at an altitude of 2,230 metres, the lodge’s fabulously remote location is sublime and unparalleled. Although quite rustic in style, the lodge is extraordinarily intimate with just four rooms and the service and food are impeccable.

At the lodge, one could spend time indulging in peaceful and quiet atmosphere and admiring the jaw-dropping views of the snow-capped peaks including Nanda Devi- the second highest mountain in India. Outside, one could practise yoga and meditation or enjoy the amazingly pristine wilderness, which lends itself beautifully to leisurely mountain walks, exhilarating treks, delicious picnics, and interactions with remote and most traditional rural communities. Absolute nirvana!

Where is Shakti 360 Leti located?

Located in the state of Uttaranchal in Northern India, getting to Shakti 360 Leti is as adventurous, spectacular and off-the-beaten-track as the destination itself! For those who do not mind long journeys, one could take an overnight (8 hours) or an early morning (5.5 hours) train ride from Delhi to Kathgodam and then continue the journey by road for about eight hours.

The scenery along the way is just astonishing! Or, if you prefer more exclusivity and convenience, you could take a private charter flight or helicopter from Delhi and then continue by road, which would take between 2 and 5 hours depending on the availability and location of the airstrip or helipad. It is also possible to incorporate Shakti 360 Leti at the end of a multiple-day trekking holiday in Kumaon, staying in tastefully restored private village houses.

What sort of accommodation is available at Shakti 360 Leti?

Built with utmost respect and care for the natural environment, Shakti 360 Leti combines the age-old indigenous building techniques with the elements of contemporary lifestyle, design, and comfort. Boasting floor-to-ceiling glass windows on two sides, each of the four rooms are designed to celebrate the breath-taking views. They also feature a stone clad floor, a wood burner and an en-suite bathroom with 24-hour running water.

The soaps, scrubs, face creams and body butters provided in the lodge are naturally made in Almora by a local organisation called SOS and contain no artificial ingredients. SOS is a village-based project that creates hand-crafted and hand-sorted products made from produce grown in a natural and eco-friendly manner in the Himalayas.

The cottages open onto a private deck with a fire pit and lounge chairs for relaxing in the sun. A short distance away from the rooms is the main entertainment area, which cosily comprises of a lounge and dining room with a central fireplace. The lodge is exceptionally eco-friendly and is mostly run on solar power. Wastewater is recycled and the food is prepared using locally grown and sourced ingredients that are incredibly fresh and organic.

The food is a highlight at Shakti 360 Leti, and meals are carefully prepared based on each guest’s personal preferences. Whether you prefer something light such as salads and tarts or traditional and rich Indian curries, nothing is ever too much trouble for the chef!

What activities are available at Shakti 360 Leti?

There are very few places in the world that are as relaxing and pure as Shakti 360 Leti. One could spend days simply relaxing at the lodge, reading, enjoying interactive cooking demonstrations with the chef, practicing yoga and meditation, and taking in the most fabulous vistas. Or, should you prefer to be more active, there is a myriad of fascinating walks to be enjoyed including:

  • Gogina village walk: Mostly flat, this long but gentle route gone up to one of the most remote and scenic villages in the valley. It’s an ideal option to mingle with the locals and discover the local way of living.
  • Shiva shrine walk: This relatively short walk (taking 1-2 hours) leads to an ancient shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva, which is a great viewpoint overlooking Ramganga Valley, Heeramani Glacier and Nanda Kot.
  • Ramganga River walk: Suitable for the more agile and fit walkers, this long walk involves going downhill to the wonderful Ramganga River passing through the lush jungle, idyllic villages, and a traditional flourmill. The return journey up the hill is quite steep.
  • Bunga walk: This incredibly challenging and steep route leads to one of the most fabulous vantage points in the region from where one can enjoy panoramic views of snow-covered mountains including Nanda Devi.

Does Shakti 360 Leti cater to families with young children?

For guests booking the entire lodge for private use, children over the age of 3 years are welcomed. Extra beds can be arranged in the bedrooms, but childcare and monitoring services are not available at the lodge. Furthermore, very young children might find the walks too challenging and in general, this region is far more suitable for children over the age of 12 years.

When is the best time to visit Shakti 360 Leti?

This region is best visited during the months of October and November, when the scenery is lush and views are clear, and between February and late-April when the weather is very dry and pleasant. The forested valleys and mountains are particularly stunning when the rhododendrons come into bloom in spring between the months of March and May.
