We are delighted to announce the launch of a short series of Participatory Trans-Antarctic Expeditions.
Amundsen Coast Camp is on the Ross Ice Shelf from where both Roald Amundsen, the first man to reach the South Pole and Robert Falcon Scott made their bases prior to the own polar attempts over 100 years ago.
Your journey will use much of the same route that Amundsen used, driving from, or to, the Pole and Ross Ice Shelf via the Leverett Glacier. (Scott – and Shackleton, who discovered it - ascended from the Ross Ice Shelf to the East Antarctic Ice Sheet via the Beardmore Glacier, to the east of Leverett; Beardmore being closer to the British hutted camp near to what is now the US McMurdo Base).
Our Partners Arctic Trucks have been operating in the Arctic for some years from their HQ in Iceland, including all the logistical organisation for the BBC “Top Gear” North Pole journey. However over the last few seasons the company have completed over 200,000 kms of travel on the Antarctic Ice Cap, mainly supporting scientific, record-attempt and the well documented Walking With The Wounded charity South Pole expedition, for which they did all the logistics.
They have also supplied vehicles to seasonal and permanent bases on “The Ice” and are instrumental in changing the way that travel takes place in such extreme locations. In so doing, Arctic Trucks have created an enviable reputation for reliability and safety and we now have the opportunity to turn this expertise to the advantage of a very select number of our clients.
There will be up to three Expeditions, crossing Antarctica north/south or south/north across some of the most interesting terrain on the continent.
The traverses will be between Union Camp, close to where the Ronne Ice Shelf meets the Antarctic mainland, and Amundsen Coast Camp, situated at the base of the Leverett Glacier where it spills into the Ross Ice Shelf at the foot of the Trans-Antarctic Mountains.
The whole will be utterly spectacular; the event of a lifetime.
These journeys are far away from normal Antarctic tourism (which is centred on the western peninsular) and therefore are indeed expeditionary, as opposed to “normal” tourist events.
The Expeditions will visit the South Pole
A World Record attempt for the fastest trip from Amundsen Coast to the Pole may be possible, conditions and circumstances allowing.
It will be possible to add other experiences to the Expeditions, including:
|When to travel||Excellent||Excellent||Good||Possible||Possible||Possible||Possible||Possible||Possible||Good||Excellent||Excellent|
|Avg Day Temp °C||-3||-10||-18||-21||-22||-23||-26||-26||-25||-19||-10||-3|
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.
