The Explorations Company, where no two journeys have ever been the same

India is a paradise for the nature-lover where we offer the most wonderful wildlife safaris. It is the only country in the world where you could on a single holiday, go looking for virtually all the great cats of the Old World which include tiger, lion, leopard, snow leopard and clouded leopard.

Tiger safaris, snow leopard safaris and wildlife holidays are our specialty! Our very own Hashim Tyabji is one of India’s leading naturalists, who not only has some of the finest wildlife lodges in India, but he has also written several books on tigers. He did the scientific research for the BBC television programme Land of the Tiger. He was also the chief game warden at Bandhavgarh National Park, where he still has a house and Hashim was Director of Operations at Tiger Tops in Nepal, where he also guided in Chitwan and Bardia.

We carefully assembles each safari around each of our clients. These wildlife holidays extend across all of the wild subcontinent. We are very particular about the camps and lodges we use, placing great emphasis on the quality of guiding and the eco-tourism ethic. We are founding members of Tour Operators for Tigers (TOFT). If you are a sane non-twitch birder who enjoys wild birds and wild country, we have the most wonderful places for you!

As a matter of course, we arrange for knowledgeable local guides who are also excellent company. Accommodation ranges from gorgeous, owner-managed tented camps with superb guiding to luxurious lodges, such as the Taj and Aman properties. We can also arrange for elephant-back safaris, searching for tigers on the backs of elephants in Corbett National Park. These normally extend from three to five days. However, the accommodation is more basic, utilising the forest rest camps, although there is also a lovely tented camp situated in Corbett National Park that we highly recommend.

Bandhavgarh:

This scenically beautiful park dominated by the enormous hill-top fort that gives the park its name, boasts a very high density of tigers, and also leopards, sloth bears, wild dogs, wolves, several species of deer, antelope and small mammals. It has over 250 species of birds. We have several, really interesting places to stay here.

Kanha National Park:

The Parkcovers over 900 square kilometres and has two entry points - at Kisli and the more remote Mukki gate - with accommodation options at each. There is a healthy population of tiger and sloth bear although the bear’s crepuscular habits mean it is rarely seen outside the hours of dawn or dusk.

Pench:

(see BBC series: Tiger: Spy in the Jungle) a delicious new camp called Jamtara Wilderness has opened at the northern end of the park. With only 5 jeeps allowed from the gate, not another lodge or camp in the area you have this beautiful range of the park north of the Pench river to yourself. Best of all you can access other ranges of the park from here. Jamtara is a very convenient link between Tadoba Tiger Reserve or Kanha and our favourite tiger reserve – Satpura.

Tadoba National Park:

The Tadoba-Andheri Tiger Reserve, situated in the Chandrapur District of Maharashtra, spans over 625 square kilometres. It became one of India's 28 Project Tiger Reserves as recently as 1993. Its hills support a dense tropical dry deciduous forest, largely made up of teak and bamboo and is carved by the Andhari River and dotted with Tadoba Lake. Although Tadoba has a healthy population of tigers, they are not used to human presence and slow to show themselves. It is worth spending several days here to have a chance to see them. The park is famous for many other great mammals such as Leopard, Sloth Bear, Gaur, Wild Dog, Striped Hyena, Jungle Cat and Chausingha (the Four-horned Antelope), not to mention a rich birdlife. Tadoba National Park is for those who want to sample a little-known, little-visited, tourist-free national park and Tiger reserve.

Corbett:

An absolutely gorgeous tiger reserve in the foothills of the Himalayas east of Delhi that offers the possibility of living inside the tiger reserve in isolated splendour with your expert guide and cook and helper. Fantastic way to experience the jungle and you can combine this with fishing for the mighty mahseer, and walking in the picturesque middle Himalayas of the Kumaon region.

Ranthambhore:

For anyone travelling in Rajasthan who wants to include a tiger safari, Ranthambhore is the most convenient reserve. It’s a very beautiful park and wildlife rich park with an atmospheric fort dominating the landscape and romantic ruins strewn through the jungle. Tiger densities and sightings are excellent and recent new regulations now ensure a much more enjoyable experience in this busy park. We use two small and very beautiful camps here – Sherbagh and Khem Villas that boast superb accommodation, food and guides.

Panna National Park:

Only 45 minutes from the ornate temple complex at Khajuraho, Panna National Park is one of the country's most accessible tiger sanctuaries; however this accessibility has inherent risks for the iconic tiger. An expanding human population and continued high demand for tiger parts in traditional medicines meant that the park had lost all of its own tigers by June 2009. More tigers have been moved here from other parks, but sightings are rare.

Satpura:

One of the largest, wildest and least known of the tiger reserves, Satpura offers the best wilderness experience in tiger country. You can walk here, or go for a thrilling 2 or 3 night trek through the park ending at the highest point in Central India; explore the forest edge by canoe, and experience game drives where you may be the only jeep I sight for long periods. Tigers are shy and unhabituated to jeeps and people and are therefore less visible than in other parks but Satpura is best for leopards, wild dogs, sloth bears, giant squirrels, gaur and birds. Best of all the unique tourism model allows you to explore the jungle virtually by yourself and experience the precious joy of being alone in the tiger country. Combine Satpura with Corbett for a unique Tiger Safari.

Nagarhole:

Near Mysore is a splendid wildlife reserve and one of the finest tiger habitats in Asia. There are some superb lodges and luxury camps here and Nagarhole fits in well with a tour of South India and Kerala. The famous tiger reserves of Central India like Bandhavgarh, Kanha, Pench and Tadoba remain extremely rewarding in terms of tiger sightings but are busy for this very reason. Kanha remains a favourite with two exceptional camps – Shergarh and Flame of the Forest - and great guides.
