The sound of laughter and a chorus of children’s voices ring out across the lush green forest. They dance to the drumbeat whilst visitors look on and smile – a heartwarming scene. Based in the heart of Bwindi National Park resides an indigenous community that has inhabited these forests for generations. It is here that a successful community project is on a mission to protect its dwindling population and improve poor living conditions. Meet with the forest-dwelling Batwa pygmy people and learn about the livelihoods of this extraordinary tribal group during an incredibly uplifting experience.

"Watch survival technique demonstrations, and learn about the herbs used for medicinal purposes and how they have flourished living at one with the natural environment."
Located in southwest Uganda and recognised as the first people of the Virunga and Bwindi forest region, the Batwa were evicted from their ancestral lands in the early 1990s to preserve endangered wildlife habitats. Today they are one of the most vulnerable communities in the country. Currently, there are only around 3,000 Batwa left living in impoverished conditions on the edges of the national parks. That’s why visionary leader Yvonne Hernandez founded the Batwa Empowerment Village project, focusing on creating a positive impact and supporting the Batwa people to live sustainably and preserve their ancient customs and culture.
During this rewarding experience, you will meet with members of the community who will explain how generations have lived in the ancient forest. Watch survival technique demonstrations, and learn about the herbs used for medicinal purposes and how they have flourished living at one with the natural environment. Discover ancient folklore and legends whilst testing your practical skills with a bow and arrow; strike up a fire and become creative using forest materials during this fascinating cultural immersion.
