Based in the heart of Bwindi National Park resides an indigenous community that has inhabited these forests for generations. It is here that a successful community project is on a mission to protect its dwindling population and improve poor living conditions. Located in southwest Uganda and recognised as the first people of the Virunga and Bwindi forest region, the Batwa were evicted from their ancestral lands in the early 1990s to preserve endangered wildlife habitats. Today they are one of the most vulnerable communities in the country. Currently, there are only around 3,000 Batwa left living in impoverished conditions on the edges of the national parks. That’s why visionary leader Yvonne Hernandez founded the Batwa Empowerment Village project, focusing on creating a positive impact and supporting the Batwa people to live sustainably and preserve their ancient customs and culture.
During this rewarding experience, you will meet with members of the community who will explain how generations have lived in the ancient forest. Whilst in the community, take the opportunity to visit Bwindi Community Hospital. Originally starting as an outreach clinic under a tree for the Batwa pygmies, today the hospital supports over 100,000 people across local and surrounding areas – a remarkable success story. Learn how the hospital is improving the quality of lives of patients and the story behind how it became one of the best-performing health facilities in Uganda.
