Guatemala Holidays - A Central American jewel

Antigua Guatemala - Cobbled Street Scene.jpg

Guatemala is the very essence of what Central America is all about – from its intricate, coloured textiles and Mayan-influenced rural communities, to the soaring ruins of its ancient civilisations, and the natural splendour of its jungles, dramatic highlands and volcanoes. Bordered by Mexico, Belize and Honduras, this beautiful country is truly a Central American jewel – rich in culture, stunning scenery, and flora and fauna.

The spectacular highlands provide a temperate and sunny climate year-round, and it’s here that you’ll detect ancient Mayan influences on the essentially rural population. The gorgeous former colonial capital of Antigua is a wonderful place to start your luxury holiday to Guatemala, wandering its cobbled streets and shady squares, before exploring colourful indigenous markets to haggle for vivid woven textiles.

Religious festivals mix indigenous and Catholic rituals in a heady mix of colour and ceremony, and Mayan deities are still revered in the small communities around Lake Atitlan.

East of the highlands on your Guatemala luxury holiday, you descend into thicker vegetation and a more humid climate as you head towards the coast at Livingston, via the Rio Dulce or ‘Sweet River’ – you may even be lucky enough to spot manatees on the river-boat ride.

The Caribbean coast gives way to an entirely different culture – that of the Garifuna, with its Afro-Caribbean flavour and vibe. Further north, you’ll encounter dense rainforest echoing with the loud calls of howler monkeys, and a profusion of impressive Mayan sites.

Each displays the dramatic pyramids and ball courts of this ancient and sophisticated civilisation, testament to the cluster of once mighty cities that ranged from southern Mexico, through Guatemala, into Belize, and even as far south as Honduras.

Luxury holidays to Guatemala are imbued with a mesmerising mix of culture, wildlife, active adventure and history – and with our wealth of personal experience and knowledge, we can add the expert touches.
